Longwood Wrestling Signs Chesapeake's Chris Davis FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood College wrestling head coach Brent Newell has announced the addition of Chris Davis/ Chesapeake-Hickory High School to his NCAA Division II Lancer squad. The highly-touted Davis will join the program beginning with the 2000-01 academic year at the College. Davis was 43-3 during his senior year at Hickory High while placing second at the Virginia Group AAA State Championships at 215-pounds following a third-place effort at the Eastern Region and a Southeastern District championship. He compiled a four-year high school record of 130-24 (.844%) while qualifying for the state tournament three times. Davis finished third at the state tournament as a junior. He was both a Region and District champion as a junior, helping Hickory High finish third as a team this year following a fifth-place team finish during his junior year. Davis was runner-up in both regional and district competition as a sophomore. Chris is the son of Kent Davis of Chesapeake, and is expected to wrestle at 197 for the Lancers while majoring in secondary education at the College. "Chris is one of the top upper weight recruits to come out of Virginia this year," commented Newell. "He is a fierce competitor that has good technique and is always in top shape for competition. "Chris beat a number of nationally-ranked wrestlers throughout his senior year. He will have the opportunity to step into a starting role right away and he should greatly improve our entire upper weights for next season." Davis joins Dean Breedlove of Mechanicsville's Atlee High School and Stan Wagner of Reisterstown, Md.'s Franklin High in this year's wrestling recruiting class at Longwood.
