Virginia Tech true freshman Brent Metcalf won a FILA Junior Freestyle National championship after defeating Mitch Smith of the New York Athletic Club 4-5, 3-0, 4-0 in the 145.5-pound finals.

Metcalf was the only returning champion to win gold at the competition this year. Metcalf, a six-time Junior National champion, was named the Outstanding Wrestler.

Returning champion Patrick McCaffrey was upset in the final match by 2005 Junior National champion and Michigan State freshman Franklin Gomez of the Michigan Wrestling Club, 0-3, 2-4 at 121 pounds.  McCaffrey was a bronze medal winner at the 2005 Junior World Championships.  

Trey McLean, a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., won a gold medal at the FILA Junior freestyle at 264.5 pounds. McLean won by technical fall over Bryan Reiss of the College Park Wrestling Club.

Junior National champion Marty Eng defeated Brandon Davis of the Arrichion Wrestling Club 2-0, 6-0 to win the title at 110 pounds.

At 132.25 pounds, Coleman Scott of the Gator Wrestling Club defeated Angel Escobedo of Indiana Univ., 2-0, 1-0.  Scott is a two-time All-American for NCAA team champion for Oklahoma State. In high school, Escobedo was a four-time Indiana state champion.

At 163 pounds, Matthew Coughlin of the Hoosier Wrestling Club pinned Dennis Galante of Lehigh Valley Athletics in 1:33.  Coughlin, an Indiana freshman, was a multiple Indiana high school state champion and top-ranked at 160 pounds as a high school senior. Galante, a state champion in New Jersey, was an All-American at the Junior Nationals last year.
 
Iowa freshman Chad Beatty of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club controlled Philip Bomberger of Penn State in a 2-0, 3-0 win at 185.

At 211.5 pounds, Virginia freshman Brent Jones of the Cavalier Wrestling Club pinned Taylor Moore of Cornell in the finals.  Both were All-Americans at the 2005 Junior Nationals in Fargo.
