Four star wrestlers repeat as Western Junior Regional Greco-Roman champions

2005 Junior National champion Marty Eng of Oregon was one of four wrestlers to repeat as winners from last year at the Western Junior Greco-Roman Regionals in Las Vegas, Nev., April 12.

Eng was the champion at 112 pounds, pinning Cadet National runner-up Eric Grajales of Florida in the second period of the gold-medal match. Eng won the first period 7-0, then pinned Grajales in the second period in 1:05. In 2005, Eng was a double champion at the Western Junior Regionals, winning both styles. 

The three other returning Western Junior Greco-Roman champions who were able to win gold medals this year were Josh Strait of Idaho at 130 pounds, Jake Swenson of Utah at 135 pounds and Kenny Lester of Florida at 275 pounds.

Strait, a Cadet National runnerup last year, defeated Avery Gardner of Idaho in the finals, 3-0, 5-0. 

Swenson defeated Jake, J.D. Goodrich of Washington in the championship match, 5-4, 3-1.

Lester scored a pin in the championship finals over Elijah Madison of Missouri in 1:18.

The tournament featured many of the best high school wrestlers in the nation, including numerous Cadet and Junior National champions and All-Americans.

The finals at 105 pounds was a battle of two Cadet National Greco-Roman champions from last year. Cadet National champion Andrew Long of Iowa defeated Cadet National champion Tyler Cox of Wyoming, 7-0, 6-8, 5-2. Long won Cadet Nationals at 84 pounds, while Cox won it at 91 pounds. Long was a Western Junior runner-up last year in Greco-Roman.

Long was one of four runners-up from the Western Junior Regionals last year who were able to return this year and capture the title. The other Western Junior runners-up from 2005 who won this year were Jon Reader of Michigan at 160 pounds, Jesse Robbins of Florida at 171 pounds and Tyrell Fortune of Oregon at 215 pounds.

Reader scored an impressive technical fall in the championship finals over Luke Munkelwitz of Minnesota, 9-3, 7-0. Reader was a 2005 FILA Cadet National double champion. 

Robbins, a Junior National champion last year, beat Kaleb Young of Minnesota in the finals, 3-0, 1-1.

Fortune, a Cadet National double champion last year, came from behind to beat Tyler Hemmesch of Minnesota, 0-3, 6-0, 6-0. 

A number of other top stars in high school wrestling were able to win Western Junior Greco-Roman titles this year.

Junior National freestyle runner-up Adam Hall of Idaho was the Western Junior Greco-Roman champion at 152 pounds, defeating Luke Manual of California in the finals, 5-0, 4-0. Hall was named Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament.

Cadet National runner-up Tyler Clark of Illinois defeated Cadet National champion Nikko Triggas of California in the finals at 119 pounds, 7-0, 7-0. Clark was second at the Cadet Nationals last year at 105 pounds, while Triggas was the Cadet National champion at 112 pounds last summer.

Junior National Greco-Roman runner-up Elijah Hutchison of Alaska was the champion at 140 pounds, defeating Dallas Hintz of Washington in the finals, 4-2, 4-0. Hutchison was also a 2005 FILA Junior National champion in Greco-Roman last year.

Other champions included Alex Kostenborder of Oregon (98), Norman Richmond of Oregon (125), Jason Adams of Minnesota (145) and John Weakley of Ohio (189).
