Norman Richmond of Oregon was named outstanding wrestler in freestyle after capturing a pair of Junior championships at the Northwest Regionals on Friday through Sunday in Battle Ground, Wash.
Richmond beat Cadet National champion Michael Mangrum of Washington 4-3, 5-2 in the Greco-Roman title match at 125 pounds and rolled to a 6-0, 10-2 technical fall over Oregon's Prescott Garner in the freestyle finals.
Austin Enoch of Oregon was named outstanding wrestler in Greco-Roman. He downed Eric Starks of Washington 3-4, 4-2, 1-1 in the Greco-Roman finals and beat Jonny Gilbertson of Washington 7-1, 1-0 in the 140-pound freestyle finals.
Junior National Greco-Roman champion Marty Eng of Oregon captured the freestyle and Greco-Roman titles at 119 pounds. Eng beat Kellen Aura of California 5-1, 6-0 in the freestyle finals and edged Chase Smith of Washington 2-1, 2-3, 3-0 in the Greco-Roman finals.
Other double Junior champions at the Northwest Regional included Stephen Cameron of Washington (105), Spencer Doran of Oregon (112), Brad Sweet of Washington (145), Trevor Hall of Washington (152), Kirk Smith of Idaho (171), Clayton Foster of Idaho (189), and Charlie Alexander of Oregon (275).
Fortune cashes in with pair of Cadet titles in Washington
Portland's Tyrell Fortune won Cadet National championships in both Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling last year. The talented 215-pounder is on track to do something special again this year.
Fortune was one of 13 Cadet wrestlers who captured both Greco-Roman and freestyle titles at the Northwest Regionals on Friday through Sunday in Battle Ground, Wash. The event served as a qualifier for the Cadet Nationals in Fargo. The top three in each weight qualify for their state teams for the national meet.
Fortune defeated Colby Davis of Washington by a 6-0, 7-0 technical fall in the freestyle finals at 215. He pinned Zach Teuber of Washington in the Greco-Roman finals.
Cadet National champion Alec Ortiz of Grand Ronde, Ore., also was a double Northwest Regional champion at 145 pounds. Ortiz was named outstanding wrestler in freestyle. Ortiz pinned Oregon's Cory Middleton in the freestyle finals and won by technical fall over Oregon's Ethan Parks in the Greco-Roman finals.
The other double champions included Marcus Morris of Oregon (91), Denny Linton of Oregon (98), David Klingsheim of California (105), Eric Luna of Oregon (112), Abner Cook of Idaho (119), Brock Gutches of Oregon (125), C.J. Thompson of Washington (130), Eric Jones of Washington (135), Jesse Chunn of Washington (140), Reid Chivers of Washington (171), and Dane Tilley of Washington (275).
Cook was named outstanding wrestler in Greco-Roman. He beat Richard Quesada of Oregon 6-0, 5-1 in the Greco-Roman finals and pinned Anthony Rivera of Washington in the freestyle finals.
Grajales, Ravannack named OW in Florida
Eric Grajales of Florida was named outstanding wrestler in Greco-Roman and Chad Ravannack of Louisiana was named outstanding wrestler in freestyle at the Southeast Junior Regional Championships on Saturday in Brandon, Fla.
Grajales won titles in Greco-Roman and freestyle at 112 pounds. He beat Mario Montoto of Florida in the Greco-Roman finals and Steven Bliss of Florida in the freestyle finals. He was a Cadet National champ in Greco-Roman last year.
Ravannack won the freestyle title at 135 and placed third in Greco-Roman. He beat Spencer Dussouy of Louisiana in the freestyle finals.
Other double winners in Florida included Schuyler Swanton of Florida (98), Justin Tortora of Florida (130) and Ivan Muller of Louisiana (275).
Ohio team wins Middle School Duals
Team Ohio Heffernan defeated Team IKWF Gold of Illinois on Sunday in the finals of the Middle School Folkstyle National Duals in Danville, Ill.
Indiana Gold beat Team IKWF Silver of Illinois in the match for third place.
