MINSK, BELARUS - Two U.S. women wrestlers claimed silver medals during the second day of wrestling at the Alexander Medved International, March 25.

Winning silver medals were Sharon Jacobson, El Cajon, Calif. (USOE/Gator WC) at 55 kg/121lbs. and Erin Tomeo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 59 kg/130 lbs.

Both of the U.S. wrestlers were able to win a medal, in spite of sustaining injuries while warming up together prior to the start of the tournament. They banged their heads, which caused a cut requiring seven stitches under Tomeo's chin and gave Jacobson a huge swollen bump on her forehead which needed treatment.

Jacobson opened the tournament with three straight wins. She defeated Tatiana Bokhan of Belarus by pin in her first match, then stopped Riabi Hela of Tunisia, 5-4, 4-0. In the semifinals, Tomeo defeated Mariyana Bavdyk of Ukraine, 7-3, 7-3.

Tomeo was defeated by Mariya Yahorava of Belarus by pin in the finals. Yarahova was eighth in the 2003 World Championships.

Tomeo was a member of the 2001 U.S. World team, and has been a U.S. Nationals runner-up three times.

Jacobson also won her first three bouts to qualify for the finals. She opened with a technical fall voer Loha Hlebik of Belarus, 6-0, 6-0. Her second round victory was over Natalya Synyshyn of Ukraine, 3-0, 3-0. In the semifinals, she beat young American star Deanna Rix by pin.

Her gold-medal finals was against Lubov Volosova of Russia, where she lost in two straight periods, 1-8, 0-1. Volosova was second in the 2001 World Championships and a 2002 European champion.

Jacobson was third in the 2005 U.S. Nationals and fourth in the 2003 World Team Trials.

"Despite the injuries, they made it to the finals," said U.S. coach Izzy Izboinikov. "They wrestled well all day. Actually, they also wrestled well in the finals. The match strategy there was not in their favor. We needed to adjust the way we wrestled in those final matches."

This brings the U.S. total of medals for the tournament to four medals in four weight classes contested. On Friday, winning a gold medal at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. was Patricia Miranda (New Haven, Conn./Sunkist Kids) and winning a bronze medal at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. was Mary Kelly (Mahomet, Ill./USOEC/New York AC).

The U.S. also qualified another athletes for the bronze-medal match, Deanna Rix (South Berwick, Maine/New York AC), who finished fifth. Rix won her first two bouts, lost to Tomeo in the semifinals, then was beaten in the bronze-medal match by Natalya Synyshyn of Ukraine, 1-0, 1-0.

"Overall, the performances were good. We got a good result today by Deanna Rix, who made the bronze-medal round and had two pins. We had two medals on the first day and two medals on the second day, and we have a whole lot more wrestling tomorrow," said Izboinikov.

Two U.S. wrestlers were entered in the men's tournament at 66 kg/145. lbs. and were eliminated from medal contention with early losses: Bill Zadick (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) and Jared Frayer (Cambridge, Mass./Gator WC).

On Sunday, the final five weight classes will be held (women's 63 kg, 67 kg, 72 kg and men's 96 kg, 120 kg).
