Beginning in March, high school wrestlers will have the opportunity to compete in against other wrestlers across the country in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling in the popular USA Wrestling Junior Regional Championships. There are eight Junior Regionals held all over the nation. Athletes are allowed to participate in any Junior Regional they choose, regardless of where they live. To wrestle in the Junior Regionals, participants must be born on or after Sept. 1, 1986 and be currently enrolled in grades 9-12. The weights for the Junior Regionals are: 98 lbs., 105.5 lbs., 112 lbs., 119 lbs., 125 lbs., 130 lbs., 135 lbs., 140 lbs., 145 lbs., 152 lbs., 160 lbs., 171 lbs., 189 lbs., 215 lbs. and 275 lbs. (there are no women's regional events on the age-group level). Wrestlers placing in the top three of their weight class at a Junior Regional will qualify for their state team at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D. that takes place July 22-29. The three Senior Regionals, located in the Rocky Mountain, Northeast, and Northern Plains regions, will coincide with the Junior Regionals. To wrestle in a Senior Regional competition, participants must be 18 years old and older, or have been born in 1987-1988 with a medical certificate. The weight classes for Seniors are: 121 lbs., 132 lbs., 145.5 lbs., 163 lbs., 185 lbs., 211.5 lbs. and 264.5 lbs. The two Senior Women's Regionals that are qualifiers for the World Team Trials are the Rocky Mountain Women's Regionals in Laramie, Wyo., Mar. 23-25 and the Northeast Women's Regionals in Brockport, N.Y., Apr. 21-23. All participants in these two events must be 17 years old and older, or have been born in 1987-1989 with a medical certificate and be citizens of the U.S. The weight classes for Senior women are: 105.5 lbs., 112.25 lbs., 121 lbs., 130 lbs., 138.75 lbs., 147.5 lbs. and 158.5 lbs. There will be no women's division at the Northern Plains. The Rocky Mountain and Northern Plains Regionals are qualifiers for the World Team Trials for the men wrestlers. Only U.S. citizens are allowed to participate in these two Regionals. Champions in each weight class qualify for the World Team Trials in Sioux City, Iowa, May 27-28. There will also be a Senior men's division at the Northeast Regionals. A summary of the regional competition follows, in order of date.
