Williams wins silver at Yasar Dogu International in Turkey, as U.S. places second in team standings

Joe Williams (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) captured a silver medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. on the final day of the Yasar Dogu International in Samsun, Turkey, on Feb. 12.

Williams' silver medal brought the U.S. total for the two-day event to five medals. Winning a gold medal on Saturday was Mo Lawal (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Winning a silver medal was Sammie Henson (Flintstone, Ga./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. Capturing bronze medals were Chris Bono (Ringgold, Ga./Sunkist Kids) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Tolly Thompson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

The U.S. placed second in the team standings with 58 points, behind host Turkey with 63 points. Cuba was third with 56 points. Seven nations entered competitors in the tournament.

Williams won three straight matches to qualify for the gold-medal finals. A key win came in the semifinals, when he stopped Hakki Ceylan of Turkey, 3-3, 1-0. In the gold-medal finals, 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Ivan Fundora of Cuba defeated Williams, 2-1, 1-0.

Williams is a two-time World bronze medalist and competed in the 2004 Olympic Games.

Michael Lightner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) placed fifth at 60 kg/132 lbs. He opened with a 4-1, 4-1 win over Hakki Gurel of Turkey, but was beaten in the semifinals by 2004 Olympic champion Yandro Quintana of Cuba, 2-1, 1-0. In the bronze-medal match, Lightner lost to Sukru Gocer of Turkey in three periods, 3-2, 0-2, 4-3.

One other American competed on Sunday, Nick Preston (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids), who lost his opening match at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and did not place.
