Eight U.S. World Team members advance to semifinals at Dave Schultz Memorial International

The second day of competition has begun at the 8th Annual Dave Schultz Memorial International held at Sports Center I at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo., Feb. 4.

All seven women's weight divisions are being contested on Saturday, along with three weight divisions in men's freestyle wrestling and three weight divisions in men's Greco-Roman wrestling.

Nine members of the 2005 U.S. World Team, from all three international styles, were competing on Saturday. Eight of these World Team members (each who hold No. 1 rankings in the United States) won their matches Saturday morning and qualified for the semifinal round.

Four members of the 2005 U.S. Women's World team advanced to the semifinals:  Stephanie Murata (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Jenny Wong (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., Sally Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Katie Downing (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 67 kg/147.5  lbs.  

All four are past World medalists. Roberts has won two World bronze medals. Murata is a past World silver medalist, and Wong and Downing has won World bronze medals.

Murata won two morning matches, pinning Susana Almeida of Brazil, 1:24 and beating Lindsay Rushton of Canada, 3-1, 4-0. Murata will face Mary Kelly (Mahomet, Ill./USOEC/New York AC) in the semifinals

Wong won her only bout of the session, stopping Audrey Pang (Princeton, N.J./New York AC), 3-0, 5-0. Wong will battle 2004 Olympic bronze medalist and two-time World silver medalist Patricia Miranda (New Haven, Conn./Sunkist Kids) in the semifinals. It will be a rematch of the finals of the 2004 New York AC Holiday Open, won by Wong.

Roberts won her only bout, a 5-0, 8-0 decision over Erica Hazen (Hazen WC), 5-0, 8-0. She will face Brianne Graham of Canada in the semifinals.

Downing had a bye during the session. Her semifinal opponent will be Megan Buydens of Canada.

Two members of the 2005 Greco-Roman U.S. World team members advanced to the semifinals:  Lindsey Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. 

Durlacher won two bouts, stopping Edy Leonel Tocal of Guatemala, 6-0, 9-0 and winning a third-period disqualification over Takumu Otsu of Japan, 2-3, 2-1, disq. He will face Yun Young-Min of Korea in the semifinals.

Warren also won twice, pinning Kenta Iwasaki of Japan, 1-1, 0:45 and beating Emil Milev of Bulgaria, 2-1, 5-0. Warren will battle Kang Kyung-Il of Korea in the semifinals.

Two members of the 2005 Freestyle World Team members advanced to the semifinals: Michael Lightner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Tolly Thompson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Lightner scored two victories, beating Fernando Iglesias of Argentina, 2-0, 6-0 and stopping Zach Roberson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) 0-1, 1-0, 2-0. He will face Noriyuki Takatsuka of Japan in the semifinals.

Thompson won his quarterfinal match over Trey McLean (Colorado Springs, Colo./USOTC), 6-0, 3-0. He will battle Kellen Fluckiger (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) in the semifinals.

The only 2005 U.S. World Team member to lose in the session was Greco-Roman star Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Byers won his first match over Tetsuya Sato of Japan, 7-0, 4-0. In the quarterfinals, he lost to David Vala of the Czech Republic, 1-1, 1-1,

Two-time World champion and seven-time World medalist Kristie Marano (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) advanced to the semifinals at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. She pinned Caroline de Lazzer Cardosa of Brazil in 1:45.

Among the upsets in the morning session was the defeat of 2003 World silver medalist Im Dae-Won of Korea at 55 kg/121 lbs. in Greco-Roman. Im lost his quarterfinal match to Kohei Hasegawa of Japan, 4-3, 1-3, 3-1.

Another mild upset came at 60 kg/132 lbs., when 2005 Junior World champion Vagif Kazief of Russia lost his opening match to Josh Moore (Cuyohoga Falls, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) 0-4, 4-0, 3-0.

The semifinals are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the medal round matches.
