Tommy Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) won a bronze medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., the only U.S. medalist during the first day of men's freestyle action at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial Golden Grand Prix in Kranoyarsk, Russia, Saturday, Jan. 28. Rowlands won two of three matches in the tournament, including a 3-0, 1-0 victory in the bronze-medal match over Gamtoev of Russia. He opened his tournament with a 5-1, 3-0 victory over Marid Mutalimov of Kazakhstan, who placed fourth at the 2004 Olympic Games. Rowlands was defeated in the semifinal round by Zhikov of Russia, who went on to win the silver medal at the weibht class. It was the second straight year that Rowlands won a medal at this event. In 2005, Rowlands won a silver medal competing at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Five other U.S. wrestlers competed on Saturday, none who qualified to compete in a medal match. The only U.S. wrestler besides Rowlands to win a match during the day was Bill Zadick (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC), who opened his tournament at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. with a 3-1, 0-3, 3-0 victory over Kim Do Sun of Korea. Zadick was eliminated in the second round when he lost to past World champion Irbek Farniev of Russia by a 4-1, 6-0 margin. When Farniev was beaten in the semifinals by Botaev of Russia, Zadick was not eligible to wrestle in the repechage rounds. Only one of the other U.S. wrestlers had two matches, Lee Fullhart (Christianburg, Va./Gator WC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Fullhart opened with a loss to Muradov of Russia, 1-0, 1-1. When Muradov qualified for the gold medal match, Fullhart was pulled back into the repechage rounds. Fullhart was then defeated by Temrezov of Russia in two periods. U.S. wrestlers who lost their first match and were eliminated without a wrestleback were Henry Cejudo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Jared Lawrence (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Chris Pendleton (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. The 66 kg/145.5 lbs. division in the men's division was loaded, as three past World champions from Russia are entered: Makhach Murtazaliev, Irbek Farniev and Alan Dudaev. Claiming the gold medal was Murtazaliev, who defeated Botaev of Russia in the finals. Dudaev met Farniev in one of the bronze-medal matches, with Dudaev taking the bronze and Farniev placing fifth.
