Sonny Yohn (Alamosa, Colo,/Alamosa High School) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of December 20-26.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

Yohn won a gold medal at 189 pounds, and was named Outstanding Wrestler in the high school division at the Reno Tournament of Champions, held in Reno, Nev., Dec. 20.

Yohn defeated Jake Wade of Wasilla, Alaska in the gold medal match, winning on a ride-out in the tiebreaker, after the regulation period ended tied at 7-7.

He helped lead Alamosa High School to the team title at the competition, which featured numerous nationally respected teams from across the nation. Alamosa scored 159.5 points, followed by Easton (Pa.) with 151.5 points, Poway (Calif) with 141.5 points, Rio Rancho (N.M.) with 141 points and Fremont (Calif.) with 139 points. A total of 94 teams from across the nation scored points in the tournament.
