Simon Fraser wins Gord Garvie Women's College Duals, beating USOEC team in finals; Canada beats USA in all-star dual

Simon Fraser Univ. of Canada won the team title at the Gord Garvie National Duals for women's college wrestling, held Friday, December 2 at Lakehead Univ. in Thunder Bay, Canada.

Simon Fraser edged the USOEC Northern Michigan team in the gold-medal finals, 20-19. Each team scored four wins during the dual meet. The match was determined at the final weight class, 80 kg, where Simon Fraser won by forfeit, as Northern Michigan did not have an entry there. Other SFU wrestlers to win bouts in the finals were Miranda Dick at 48 kg, Emily Richardson at 59 kg and Erin Church at 72 kg.

Claiming third place was the Univ. of Saskatchewan, which defeated the Univ. of Calgary, 22-13 in the bronze medal round. Saskatchewan won five of the eight matches in this dual meet.

The Univ. of the Cumberlands placed fifth, with a 22-12 win over Lakehead Univ. in the medal rounds. The Cumberlands entered this competition as the No. 1 ranked team in the North American college polls.

Brock Univ. was seventh, defeating Missouri Valley College Purple 20-14. Brock was only placed in this match because the Missouri Valley College Orange team (fourth in Pool B) was scheduled to face the Purple team, The coaches chose to change the pairing, placing Brock (fifth in Pool B) in the match, so Missouri Valley College athletes would not have to wrestle each other.

The 10-team tournament was split into two pools, with the medal round pairings determined by the results of the pool matches.

Simon Fraser won Pool A with a 4-0 record, followed by Saskatchewan, the Cumberlands, Missouri Valley Purple and Memorial.

The USOEC Northern Michigan team won Pool B, followed by Calgary, Lakehead, Missouri Valley Orange and Brock,

At the conclusion of the dual meet tournament, an all-star dual was held between athletes from Canada and the United States. Canada won the dual meet 21-10, winning six of the eight matches. Canada won the first four matches, and the final two matches of the dual meet.
