USA Wrestling has received reports that the U.S. men's freestyle team in the Daghestan Republic of Russia has placed second in the Super Cup that featured teams from five of the top wrestling nations in the world.

In the finals, the team from Russia defeated the American team four matches to three.

The U.S. opened the tournament with a victory at 55 kg/121 lbs., as 1988 World champion Sammie Henson (Flintstone, Ga./Sunkist Kids) defeated Zalimkhan Cuzhaev.

Russia won the next two bouts, with past gold medalists defeating their American rivals. At 60 kg/132 lbs., 2004 Olympic champion Mavlet Batirov (Russia) defeated Michael Lightner (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids).

The U.S. won the next two weight classes. At 74 kg/163 lbs., two-time World bronze medalist Joe Williams (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) stopped 2002 World silver medalist Magomed Isagadjiev. At 84 kg/185 lbs., Mo Lawal (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) defeated Chamsulvara Chamsulvaraev.

Russia won the last two bouts to take the dual meet. At 96 kg/211.5 lbs., Shamil Gitinov defeated 2004 Olympian Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC). In the deciding final match, 2005 Junior World champion Bilyl Machov defeated 2005 World bronze medalist Tolly Thompson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids)

The five teams were separated into a bracket. Russia advanced to the finals with wins over Georgia, five matches to two, and Belarus, seven matches to zero.

The United States moved into the finals with a dominant victory over Azerbaijan, seven matches to none.

According to the Russian Wrestling Federation last month, the first place team will be awarded $40,000, the second place team will win $30,000 and the third place team will receive $20,000.
