For the first time, USA Wrestling has officially declared team champions and final team standings for the competitions at the ASICS/Vaughan  Junior and Cadet Nationals, which were held in Fargo, N.D., July 23-30.

Team standings were conducted using the international wrestling scoring system, which awards points for All-American placements, which are the top eight in each weight class. Champions receive eight points, runners-up seven points, etc., going down to one point for an eighth-place finish.

Junior wrestlers are athletes in grades 9-12, while Cadets are athletes who are 15 and 16 years old. There are five divisions contested in Fargo, with Junior and Cadet boys competing in both freestyle and Greco-Roman and Junior girls competing in freestyle.

The dominant team in Fargo in 2005 was Pennsylvania, which captured team titles in three divisions: Junior freestyle, Junior Greco-Roman and Cadet Freestyle.

The other states to capture team titles in the competition were Minnesota, the Cadet Greco-Roman champions, and California, the Junior women's freestyle champions.

In Junior freestyle, Pennsylvania won the team race with 50 points, led by one individual champion,  Adam Frey (130) and 10 All-Americans. Iowa placed second with 45 points, including 11 All-Americans, led by three champions: Mark Kist (105), Mitch Mueller (135), Ryan Morningstar (152). California and Missouri were tied in third with 39 points. California had three champions, Boris Novachkov (98), Robby Smith (215) and Erik Nye (275) and eight All-Americans, while Missouri had one champion, Louis Caputo (189) and seven All-Americans. Minnesota placed fifth with 38 points, with no individual champions but nine All-Americans.

Rounding out the top 10 teams in Junior freestyle were New Jersey in sixth, Florida and Ohio tied in seventh, Idaho in ninth and Oklahoma in 10th.

In Junior Greco-Roman, Pennsylvania scored 56 points, with champions Frey and Matthew Kyler (112) and 10 All-Americans. Florida placed second with 50 points, with nine All-Americans including three champions: Marco Toledo (152), Jesse Robbins (160) and David Craig (171). California was third with 42 points, led by champions Novachkov and Smith and seven total All-Americans. Oregon was fourth with 37 points, featuring champion Marty Eng (105) and nine All-Americans. Fifth place was a tie between Minnesota and New York with 35 points. Neither state had a champion, but Minnesota had 10 All-Americans and New York had eight All-Americans.

Rounding out the top 10 teams in Junior Greco-Roman were Idaho and Illinois tied in seventh and Missouri and Washington tied in ninth.

Pennsylvania also won the Cadet freestyle competition with 65 points, with an impressive 14 All-Americans but no individual champions. Ohio placed second with 48 points, led by champion David Taylor (91) and nine total All-Americans. Illinois was third with 47 points, featuring champion Tyler Clark (105) and nine All-Americans. New Jersey was fourth with 46 points, including champions Kellen Russell (125) and Mario Mason (135) and 10 All-Americans. Fifth place went to Missouri with 40 points, led by champion Deron Winn (189) and eight All-Americans.

Rounding out the top 10 teams in Cadet freestyle were Washington in sixth, Michigan and Oregon tied in seventh, Iowa in ninth and Minnesota and New York tied in 10th.

Minnesota won the Cadet Greco-Roman team title in a close race, scoring 52 points and featuring champions Jacob Deitschler (130) and Torrey Line (160) with 10 All-Americans. Second place went to Washington with 50 points, led by champions Michael Mangrum (119) and Andrew Buck (171) and 13 All-Americans. Missouri was third with 40 points, including champions Winn and Shane Nay (135) and seven All-Americans. Ohio was fourth with 38 points, led by champion Bo Touris (105) and 10 All-Americans. Pennsylvania claimed fifth, with champion Myles Caragein (275) and 10 All-Americans.

Rounding out the top 10 teams in Cadet Greco-Roman were Oregon in sixth, California in seventh, Illinois in eighth, plus Wisconsin and Utah tied in ninth.

California had a strong performance in winning the team title in Junior women's freestyle, with 52 points, including champion Tatiana Padilla (119) and 14 individual All-Americans. Texas placed second with 31 points, led by 11 All-Americans but no champions. New York, with six All-Americans and champion Juanita Russell (195), were third with 26 points. Hawaii placed fourth with 24 points, led by champion Desiree Memea (175) and five All-Americans. Washington captured fifth place with 23 points, with four All-Americans and champion Melissa Simmons (160).

Rounding out the top 10 teams in the Junior women's freestyle were Wisconsin in sixth, Michigan in seventh, Minnesota in eighth and Connecticut and Ohio tied in ninth.

In an unofficial review of all five tournaments during the week, by combining the team scores from each division. Pennsylvania won the overall team title, with 208 points. California was in second with 182 points, followed by Minnesota in third with 164 points, Ohio in fourth with 148 points and Washington in fifth with 146 points.

Rounding out the top 10 teams in the overall team standings was Missouri in sixth, Illinois in seventh, Florida in eighth, New York in ninth and Oregon in 10th.
