WASHINGTON, DC - Athletics Director James DeStefano announced that Gallaudet University will no longer offer a wrestling program at the NCAA Division III level. He cited lack of participation as one of the main factors for the cancellation of the program.
Gallaudet has lacked players who meet the criteria to participate in the 10 different weight classes which is required to compete against other Division III institutions. DeStefano cited that a vast number of schools have dropped their wrestling programs, making it more difficult for the university to find comparable opponents. He also mentioned that he is willing to support a club team depending upon the number of athletes that show interest in wrestling on a daily level.
Note: Gallaudet is the world's only university that brings together deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing students as well as faculty in the common pursuit of education.
