USA Wrestling has updated its new "Bout of the Week" which has been posted as a video file on-line on TheMat.com Audio/Video website . The feature this week is the 2005 Nate Gallick vs. Odabasi Tevfik men's freestyle match at the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey at 60 kg/132 lbs. This match has been placed on the TheMat.com's new Audio/Video website, which was the former USA Wrestling Member's Only website. The new website has been redesigned and reformatted and was launched today. It is an exciting upgrade that will better serve the wrestling community and provides cutting-edge technology. The World University Games (WUG) is a multi-sport event, now in its 24th year. Similar to the Olympic Games or Pan American Games, it features only athletes who are enrolled in college. Overall, there were 14 sports in the 2005 World University Games, but wrestling was included for the first time since 1981. The athletes can be as old at 27 years old and must have been enrolled in college within a specified time. This opens the possibilities that a young athlete could face an older wrestler, something that occurred often during the WUG in Turkey. Many of the U.S. athletes were in their early 20's, just getting started on their international careers, while many of the other competitors had extensive international backgrounds. Such was the case in the Gallick vs. Tevfik match. Odabasi Tevfik of Turkey was among the veterans in the field, wrestling on his home mats in front of his countrymen. Tevfik competed at the 2004 Olympic Games, and placed a strong sixth at the 2003 World Championships. He was a 2004 European freestyle champion, which makes him a strong medal contender at the World level. Tevfik also has won medals at the 2003 CISM World Military Championships, as well as the 2000 Junior World Championships and the 1997 Cadet World Championships. He is clearly a proven international talent. Gallick was making his major international debut at the World University Games. A star for nationally-respected Sunnyside High School in Tucson, Ariz., Gallick was a medalist at the USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior Nationals before moving on to compete at Iowa State for coach Bobby Douglas, an Olympic freestyle coach and respected technician. Gallick quickly proved his abilities in freestyle wrestling, winning a silver medal at the 2003 University Nationals and placing seventh at the Senior U.S. Nationals that year. He earned a spot on the 2003 Junior World Team. In the fall of 2004, he won a gold medal at the Sunkist Kids/ASU International Open, beating many well-known freestyle veterans. He was a strong fourth at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, an amazing feat for a college student in today's wrestling environment. His college career also took off, with a fifth place finish in 2004, and a runner-up performance at the 2005 NCAA Championships. This spring, Gallick went right from the folkstyle season into the international competition, placing an impressive second at the 2005 U.S. Nationals, losing only to Michael Lightner in the finals. He followed that performance with another strong effort, placing second at the World Team Trials and losing to Lightner in the championship finals in Gallick's home gymnasium at Iowa State. Gallick also entered the University World Team Trials in Colorado Springs in May and captured the gold medal, earning the trip to the World University Games. Although he is just 22 years old, Gallick was not intimidated by the strong field in Izmir. He won three straight matches, not surrendering a single point. He beat Jannek Lips of Estonia, 1-0, 2-0 in bout one, Andrei Perepelita of Moldova, 1-0, 3-0 in the next round, then Abbas Barglarbagi of Iran, 3-0, 3-0 in his third match. The finals match between Gallick and Tevfik was active right off the bat, with a scramble that gave the Turkish wrestler a three point throw. Gallick lost his first period of the tournament, 2-6, and was behind against a proven Olympic veteran. In the second period, Gallick and Tevfik did not score, and Gallick finished a takedown off the leg clinch to win the period, 1-0. The bout went to the deciding third period, another scoreless battle until there were nine seconds left, and Gallick hit a takedown for three points and the victory. Tevfik is already a well-known international wrestler. Gallick, with his gold-medal performance at the World University Games and clutch finals victory over Tevfik, is no longer a secret on the world level.
