Hughes wins silver medal at Veterans World Greco-Roman Championships in Serbia-Montenegro

Ronald Hughes (Hollister, Calif.) claimed a silver medal at the 2005 Veterans World Greco-Roman Championships in Belgrade, Serbia-Montenegro, July 22-24. Hughes, who was a Veterans World champion in 2004, was among three wrestlers from the United States who competed in the Veterans World Championships in Greco-Roman, which is for athletes who are 35 years old and above. Hughes placed second at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. in Division B (41-45 years old). He won his first two matches by pin, defeating Latip Chatuev of Russia and Dmitry Zangarov of Russia. In the gold-medal finals, Hughes was defeated by Valeri Petrov of Bulgaria, 7-0, 4-0. The other two U.S. wrestlers in the tournament were unable to win a medal, placing in a tie for fifth in their weight classes. In Division A, (35-40 years), Jeffrey Anderson (Elburn, Ill.) lost two matches in the 85 kg/187.5 lbs. division. He opened with a loss to Alexander Kolobov of Russia, 5-0, 6-0, then was pinned by Oliver Olah of Slovakia. In Division D (51-55 years), Stephen Contarino (Palmetto, Fla.) was defeated in his first-round match at 85 kg/187.5 lbs., losing to Ryszard Szypura of Sweden, 7-0, 9-2. All three of these U.S. athletes also competed at the Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships a year ago in Seinajoki, Finland. A total of 38 nations were entered in the competition this year. Russia won the team title with 371 points, followed by Iran with 284 points, Ukraine with 141 points, Germany with 128 points and Hungary with 113 points.
