MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (February 2, 2001) - West Virginia's wrestling team defeated No. 25 Virginia Tech 24-23 at the WVU Coliseum Friday evening in an EWL matchup. The Mountaineers (4-4, 1-2) won five of the ten matches, including two by forfeit, and led 24-9 with three matches left in meet. However, the Hokies (6-6-1, 2-2) cut the deficit to 24-19 after No. 5 Chris Martin (165) and No. 12 Eric Hall (174) tallied a major decision and a pin, respectively. Mountaineer junior Jon Foster then lost to Tech's Scott Justus by a major decision, 10-22, in the evening's final match, but gave the Mountaineers the one point victory. The match, which delivered two pins and three forfeits, started at 197 pounds where WVU's Martius Harding defeated West Cummings 9-7. Harding is now 13-11 on the season. West Virginia heavyweight Ryan Kehler, ranked seventh in the nation, pinned Brian Schneider in nine seconds to give the Mountaineers a 9-0 victory. The pin gave the junior from Klingerstown, Pa., nine on the season, which ties him for third on WVU's all-time seasonal pins list. Kehler now has 18 career pins, one shy of tying him for fifth on WVU's career pins list. He leads the team with a 22-4 record and is now in sole possession of third place on WVU's all-time seasonal heavyweight seasonal wins list. Freshman 125 pounder Greg White won by forfeit and redshirt freshman Brian Floyd tallied a 6-4 decision in overtime against Jeremy Gaysek, 6-4, to give the Mountaineers an 18-0 lead. White is now 2-11 while Floyd is 9-13. Virginia Tech's Sean Gray, ranked fourth in the nation, won by forfeit at 141 pounds, while Brian Gray defeated WVU's Anthony Regalbuto 9-8. Joe Carr, at 157 pounds, won by forfeit to give the Mountaineers the lead for good. Carr is now 8-0 in dual meet action this season and has won seven straight matches. He is now 15-4 on the year. The Mountaineers return to action, tomorrow, Saturday, February 3, when they take on No. 12 Lock Haven at 7:30 p.m., in an EWL showdown at the WVU Coliseum.
