BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech wrestling coach Tom Brands, along with the Virginia Tech athletics department, announced Monday the transfer of Christian Smith to the Hokie wrestling program. Smith was the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference champion at 125 pounds for Duke University, going 30-12 overall and earning a bid to the NCAA Championships. Smith missed most of the 2004-05 season after sustaining an injury early in the season. He was 12-5 on the year with three falls before being sidelined. Smith, who is 42-17 for his career, will be a redshirt sophomore as he was granted a medical redshirt. "We're obviously excited about the transfer of Christian to our program," Brands said. "He is a good addition to the program and strengthens our lower weight classes. We were already strong [in the lower weights] with Justin Staylor, but Christian adds good stability and re-enforces our strength." Smith is a native of Chesapeake, Va., where he was a three-time AAA Virginia state champion at Western Branch High School. Smith was also a 2002 USA Wrestling junior grand champion and was ranked No. 4 among high school seniors by USA Magazine. He finished his prep career with a record of 176-16. Smith joins an already strong incoming freshman recruiting class that was ranked No. 2 in the nation by both Intermat.com and W.I.N. Magazine. Joining Smith will be a scholarship class consisting of Jon Bonilla-Bowman, Jay Borschel, David Kiley, Daniel LeClere, T.H. Leet, Mark Logan, Brent Metcalf, Daniel Moran, Kevin O'Connor and Joe Slaton. This past week, Metcalf continued to impress, winning both the 145-pound weight classes in the Greco-Roman and freestyle competitions at the 2005 Asics/Vaughn Junior National Championships at Fargo, N.D., earning Most Outstanding Wrestler honors in both events. The two titles gave him six for his career, tying the record set by Sean Hage of Georgia. He was also named national wrestler of the week by TheMat.com. Classes at Virginia Tech begin on Monday, Aug. 22, where all of these wrestlers, in addition to the returnees and invited walk-ons will begin the 2005-06 academic year. Tech's schedule should be finalized and released by the end of the month.
