Tony Ersland of Evanston, Ill. was named USA Wrestling' FILA Junior/University Person of the Year. This award goes to a leader(s) who works with athletes and programs on the FILA Junior (ages 17-20) and University (ages 18-24) levels. Ersland has served as the top assistant coach at Northwestern Univ. for five years. He has worked with head coach Tim Cysewski to build the Wildcat program, which had its most successful team in years during the 2004-05 college season. Ersland is responsible for recruiting duties, and works directly coaching Northwestern's upper weight wrestlers . Ersland has served five years as event director for the University National Championships , which has been held at Northwestern Univ. for many years. Ersland manages all of the activities of the local organizing committee for the tournament, which features the top 18-24 year old athletes in the nation competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. In addition, he is the tournament director of the FILA Cadet National Championships, which includes the nation's best wrestlers who are 15-17 years old, and is held alongside the University Nationals. Ersland also is a coach with the Wildcat Wrestling Club, which includes members of the Northwestern Univ. team as well as other national-caliber athletes on the Senior and age-group levels. The proceeds from the University Nationals helps support the Wildcat club, and is used for the athletes on the club to attend events such as the FILA Junior Nationals, the U.S. Nationals and training camps at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Ersland is a USA Wrestling NCEP bronze certified coach. "Competing at the FILA Junior and University Nationals is a tremendous value to the college wrestlers," said Ersland. "It is invaluable for the experience that you gain. Because it is different than the college style, it's not the same old grind for the wrestlers. It can be fun, and is a learning experience. It is a big help in the development of the athletes." Ersland served a year as the head assistant coach at Northern Illinois Univ., and was also a graduate assistant coach for Central Michigan Univ. He competed for the Univ. of Iowa, where he was a four-year letterman and a NCAA Div. I qualifier in 1997. He received a bachelor's degree in psychology at Iowa.
