FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State University Director of Athletics Gene Taylor today announced the university and USA Wrestling have reached a tentative agreement to extend the ASICS/Vaughan USA Wrestling Junior and Cadet National Championships contract for three more years through 2008. The three-year contract will be reviewed by NDSU President Dr. Joseph Chapman for final approval. "We're excited about the opportunity to host this great event for another three years. It brings a tremendous amount of exposure to our university, community and athletic program," said Taylor. "It's even more important as we transition our wrestling program to Division I." The "world's largest wrestling tournament" is hosted at the Fargodome and Bison Sports Arena. North Dakota State and the Fargo-Moorhead community has served as host for the event for the past 13 years. The Junior tournament has been in Fargo since 1992. The Cadet tournament joined the mix in 1996. "USA Wrestling is excited to reach a tentative agreement with North Dakota State athletics for the next three years," said Pete Isais, USA Wrestling Director of National Events. "NDSU and the Fargo-Moorhead community continue to provide a team effort to run the world's largest wrestling tournament successfully." The ASICS/Vaughan USA Wrestling Junior and Cadet National Championships attracts about 4,500 wrestlers, along with a large following of officials, parents and fans. "We're thrilled to be welcoming USA Wrestling back to Fargo-Moorhead for another three years. The Fargo-Moorhead Convention & Visitors Bureau is honored to play a role in hosting the largest wrestling event in the world," said Cole Carley, Fargo-Moorhead CVB Executive Director. "This is always the biggest event in any summer. We estimate direct spending in the community during USA Wrestling to be more than $5,000,000 with an ultimate economic impact of about $10,000,000."
