John Heyman named USA Wrestling Official of the Year

John Heyman of Valrico, Fla. was named USA Wrestling Official of the Year. He was selected by the U.S. Wrestling Officials Association (USWOA), which is affiliated with USA Wrestling.    Heyman has been a wrestling referee within USA Wrestling since 1986. He hold the highest rank for an official within USA Wrestling, a USA M-1. Heyman retired as an international wrestling official in 2004, with the highest rank, the FILA-1.    "There could never be a more deserving person for this award than John Heyman, based upon his work and contributions to USA Wrestling and the USWOA," said Rick Tucci, President of the USWOA.    He has worked numerous international events, including major tournaments in Poland, Hungary and Italy, as well as the Pan American Championships. Heyman has also officiated at the major international events held in the United States, including the Dave Schultz Memorial International, the U.S. Open International and the  Sunkist Kids International Open.    He has also worked all of the USA Wrestling national championships at every age level. Heyman was named Outstanding Official at the 2005 National Junior Dual Championships.    Heyman has been very active with USA Wrestling on many levels. He has served on the USWOA Board for many years. He was also the state chairperson for USA Wrestling in Florida for seven years and also served as the state's officials director. Heyman also served on USA Wrestling's National Junior Council.    He has coached kids wrestling clubs in his state, even though he was not a wrestler himself. He got involved in the sport when his son became a wrestler at the age of five.  Heyman has been inducted into the Florida chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his service to the sport in his state. His wife Dee is a nationally ranked pairing official, and has also worked numerous major competitions across the nation.
