Fargo, N.D. - One of the final preliminary sessions of the ASICS/Vaughan Cadet National Freestyle Championships broke every pool down to only four wrestlers, with only round-robin matches left to decide which wrestlers will go compete for which place on the All-American podium at the FargoDome. Two wrestlers, Tyler Cox of Wyoming (91 lbs.) and Torrey Line of Minnesota (160), entered the second day of competition with a chance to win the coveted Cadet Triple Crown. Only Line is still alive for a chance to compete for a national title and Triple Crown, but both suffered crippling losses late in pool competition. The Cadet Triple Crown goes to any Cadet wrestler who wins the USA Wrestling national title in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle during the same year. Cox lost his final match of the evening, 11-6 to B.J. Futrell of Illinois, who is undefeated in the competition. Futrell has already defeated the other two remaining wrestlers in his pool and will have to wait until tomorrow to find out who his finals opponent will be. Line was cruising through his competition on the second day, after struggling past a 4-3 win on the first day. But in his final match of the evening, he was defeated 5-4 in overtime by Kirk Smith of Idaho. Smith is undefeated in the pool, but there are plenty of matches left to be wrestled in this pool, leaving a crack in the door for Line. 10 wrestlers have earned trips to the finals, and the finals matchups at 84 lbs. and 215 lbs. have been decided. At 84 lbs., Greco-Roman champion Andrew Long of Iowa, younger brother of former NCAA finalist Dylan Long, will face Ricky Reinoehl of Pennsylvania in the finals. The 215-pound final will matchup Greco-Roman champion Tyrell Fortune of Oregon and D.J. Bruce of Illinois. Ben Sergent of Ohio will compete in the 98-pound final after he survived some tough matches this evening. Sergent defeated Shane Leister of Pennsylvania 2-1 in overtime, Nick Lester of Missouri 7-5 and Nathan Furches of Kansas 4-1 to advance to the finals. At 105 lbs., Mark Weber of Michigan earned a trip to the finals by also squeezing through some tough matches in the first two days. Of Weber's nine wins, six were by three points or less. Nate Moore, younger brother of NCAA champion Cliff Moore, became the second Iowan to qualify for the championship bout with a dominating performance on the night at 112 lbs. Moore only allowed seven points to be scored on him in eight bouts, while scoring 79 himself. At 119 lbs., Greco-Roman champion Michael Mangrum of Washington edged out a 6-4 win over Collin Marcicki of Michigan before posting a 14-1 win in his final match to get into the finals. Returning All-American Luke Ashmore of Texas skated into the finals at 140 lbs. Ashmore has not allowed a point in seven matches, outscoring his opponents 72-0. Luke Rebertus of Maryland, also a returning All-American, placed himself in the 160-pound final. After struggling through 6-3 and 6-5 wins on the first day of competition, Rebertus pounded most of his opponents on the second day, recording a pin and technical fall in three wins. Long, Mangrum, Line and Fortune are just four of the 10 wrestlers also still competing to win double titles in Fargo. The other six wrestlers are Bo Touris of Ohio (105), Nikko Triggas of California (112), Eren Civan of Maryland (145), Andrew Buck of Washington (171), Deron Winn of Missouri (189) and Myles Caragein of Pennsylvania (275). Complete brackets in each weight class can be found posted in the special section on TheMat.com at: www.themat.com/specialevents/2005/fargo/default.asp.
