The evening session of the ASICS/Vaughan Cadet National Freestyle Championships whittled down the size of the field during Wednesday evening, July 27 at the FargoDome on the campus of North Dakota State in Fargo, N.D. Four wrestlers entered the tournament with a chance to win the Cadet Triple Crown. Only two are undefeated after the first day and still competing in the tournament. The Cadet Triple Crown goes to any Cadet wrestler who wins the USA Wrestling national title in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle during the same year. The other two wrestlers attempting to win the Triple Crown who remained unbeaten were Tyler Cox of Wyoming at 91 pounds and Torrey Line of Minnesota at 171 pounds. Two of the four athletes seeking the Cadet Triple Crown was eliminated, and will not place in their weight class. Eric Grajales of Florida at 98 pounds lost his first match of the tournament by pin to Ben Sergent of Ohio. He barely won his second bout, a 13-12 win over Paul Montoya of Colorado. He had another scare in the third round, having to go overtime to defeat Jeff Janecky of California, 14-9. After scoring a pin in the fourth round, Grajales suffered his second loss in the fifth round, losing to Jake Love of Montana, 6-2. Another athlete seeking the Triple Crown lost twice and was eliminate after round six, Jake Deitschler of Minnesota at 130 pounds. He won his first three matches, but then was beaten soundly by Sean Bilideau of Massachusetts in a 12-2 technical fall in the fourth round. After another victory, Deitschler was knocked out of the tournament in a 12-0 technical fall loss to Micah Bollinger of Pennsylvania. In a third-round match, a rematch of the Cadet Greco-Roman finals from Monday night, Dak Adamson of New Mexico scored a 16-6 technical fall over DeVaughn Perkins of Nebraska. Adamson opened up the scoring by earning exposure points on the mat in the second period. It was a reversal of the Greco-Roman final, won by Perkins, 6-2. Adamson suffered a loss in the fifth round to Kellen Russell of New Jersey, 7-6. By the day's end, Perkins had been eliminated from the tournament, losing a sixth round match to Hollan Gravely of Alaska, 6-4 in overtime. Adamson remained alive in the draw. One of the returning All-Americans, Colin Marcicki of Michigan, went on a pinning spree during the first day at 119 pounds, putting away his first five opponents in less than a minute each time. His pin times on Wednesday were 49 seconds, 16 seconds, 27 seconds, 24 seconds and 38 seconds. A number of past All-Americans suffered two losses and were eliminated. Another All-American, Grant Sutter of Wisconsin, was beaten at 91 pounds in the first round by Gabriel Ramos of New Jersey, 10-4, then eliminated in the next match by Zach Zummo of Pennsylvania, 4-3. At 105 pounds, returning All-American PJ Martinez of California lost his first match to Michael Garafalo of Pennsylvania, 5-2, then was eliminated in the third round with a 5-1 loss to Matt McDonough of Iowa. 2004 All-American Vince Ramos of Illinois dropped his first match at 140 pounds, 7-2 to Eric Cubberly of Ohio, won two straight matches, then was eliminated in the fourth round with a loss by pin to Hunter Meys of New York in 56 seconds. Another All-American who did not advance past the first day was Tyler Gateman of Washington, who went out in the fifth round. After winning his first three bouts, Gateman lost to Mark Weber of Michigan, 8-5 and Nic Bedelyon of Pennsylvania, 6-4. An example of how tough this event was on Wednesday was shown at 152 pounds, which featured just one returning All-American, Chris Hacker of Oklahoma. In the 2005 Cadet National Greco-Roman finals, Michael Chairs of New York defeated Hacker for the title. After the first day in freestyle, both Hacker and Chairs have lost a match and may have their chances to reach the finals again thwarted.
