The second day of competition came to a conclusion at the ASICS/Vaughan Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals in Fargo, N.D., with all of the weight classes reduced to only a few medal contenders, with action at the FargoDome on Sunday, July 24. The four returning Cadet National Greco-Roman champions are still alive in the competition. Eric Grajales of Florida has a 5-0 record at 98 pounds, with two pins, two technical falls and a 10-7 win over Ian Paddock of New York. Brian Owen of Washington has seven straight wins at 112 pounds in this event, including three technical falls and four decisions. Owen's closest bout was a 14-8 win over Matt Bonson of Pennsylvania in the sixth round. Luke Rebertus of Maryland qualified for the three-athlete round-robin at 160 pounds, with a 5-1 record for the tournament. Rebertus lost a 5-1 decision earlier to Tito Pica of California, who remains undefeated and needs one more win to secure a spot in the finals. Returning champion Deron Winn of Missouri was dominant at 189 pounds, with four straight technical falls, and then a bye through the five rounds at his division. Many of the pools in the Cadet tournament are down to the four athletes who have qualified to be All-Americans. The action on Monday morning will complete the pool competitions, and set up the medal match finals, which are set for 3:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon. A list of competitors still alive in the Cadet Championships is at the end of this story. The Junior division held its second session of competition, and the field was reduced considerably in most of the weight classes. One of last year's Junior double champions, Brent Metcalf of Michigan, continued unbeaten with victories in the second session. Metcalfe scored a 13-2 technical fall over Andrew Bradley of Delaware, a 13-0 technical fall over Ty Reagan of Arizona and a 10-0 technical fall over Calvin Miller of California. Four other returning Junior National Greco-Roman champions also continued in the draw without a loss Matt McNaughton of Illinois at 112 pounds won his match for the session, a 12-0 technical fall over Noah Grovenstein of Wyoming, but had a tight third-round match, beating James Nicholson of Iowa, 11-8. At 130 pounds, Jayson Ness of Minnesota won his bouts for the second session, a 10-0 technical fall over Jared Nelson of Colorado and then pinned Jake Thompson of Idaho in 2:28. Brett Robbins of Illinois, a returning champion at 140 pounds, won his bout for the session, a 1:05 pin over Ryan Smith of Ohio Returning champion Kyle Bounds of Washington, competing at 160 pounds, claimed a 10-0 technical fall over Jason Logan of Texas and a 10-0 technical fall over Jonathan Ruiz of Florida and a 13-0 technical fall over Devin Jurczak of Michigan. Two of the nation's top high school women wrestlers entered the Greco-Roman division this year and were competing without a loss after the first session: Deanna Rix of Maine at 130 pounds and Nicole Woody of Maryland at 98 pounds. Both were winners of the ASICS/Vaughan Junior Girls Nationals last summer in Fargo, and chose to enter the boys Greco-Roman division. Deanna Rix of Maine lost her first match of the tournament at 130 pounds in the third round, where she was defeated by Gus Lee of North Dakota, 3-0. She lost her match by default in her next match from an injury she received in that match. Nicole Woody of Maryland at 98 pounds, after winning an opening match, was defeated in the second round in a 10-0 technical fall to Zach Pope of Ohio.
