Three returning champs unbeaten as ASICS/Vaughan Cadet Nationals starts with first day of Greco-Roma

The top 15- and 16-year old wrestlers in the United States started their competition at the ASICS/Vaughan Cadet National Greco-Roman Championships, at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., Saturday, July 23 A total of 867 wrestlers from 44 states entered this year's Cadet tournament in Greco-Roman. Three returning Cadet National Greco-Roman champions all were unbeaten during the first day: Eric Grajales of Florida at 84 pounds, Brian Owen of Washington at 112 pounds, and Deron Winn of Missouri at 189 pounds. Grajales won four matches, a 10-0 technical fall over Ethan Martin of Oklahoma, a 1:50 pin over Nicholas Krokowski of New York a 10-0 technical fall over Tyler Lander of Oregon and a 2:42 pin over Collin Hase of Kansas. Owens won his first four matches, starting with a 11-0 technical fall over Zach Reeb of Kansas, and a 10-0 technical fall over Josh Fitch of Maryland, a 10-0 technical fall over Matt Pinero of Louisiana, and a 5-1 decision over Dylan Dabolt of New York. Winn won his first four matches 189B 11-0 technical fall over Patrick Daddino of New York, 10-0 technical fall over Josh Miller of Washington and a 10-0 technical fall over Brady Cooper of Idaho and a11-0 technical fall over Jeremy Gross of Pennsylvania. One of the returning champions suffered a loss in his fifth match,Luke Rebertus of Maryland at 160 pound Reburtus opened with two wins, a 12-0 technical fall over Diego Ezree of Arizona and a 7-0 decision over Wes Keleher of Missouri. In the fourth round, he edged Cody Shlankek of Wyoming, 6-5. In round five, he was defeated 5-1 by Tito Pica of California. In addition to the four champions, there were 41 past Cadet All-Americans from last year were entered in the tournament this year. Most of these athletes went the first day without a loss, but there were a number of All-Americans who were defeated at least once. The largest weight classes went as many as five rounds in competition during Saturday, eliminating a number of athletes in each division. The Junior Greco-Roman Championships will compete on Sunday morning, after registration this evening and weighins in the morning. The Cadet Greco-Roman tournament moves into its third session on Sunday night at 4:00 p.m., along with a second round of Junior Greco-Roman.
