Vilnius, Lithuania - On the first day of competition at the FILA Junior Greco-Roman World Championships, none of the four U.S. wrestlers competing won a medal. Brandon Rupp (Pocatello, Idaho) placed fifth at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. for the highest finish of U.S. wrestlers on Saturday. Rupp was dominant in the early rounds, pinning Otari Bolkvadze of Georgia in the first round and Yernur Gainiuly of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Rupp was downed by Jalmar Sjoeberg of Sweden, 2-4, 3-5. He then fell into a bronze medal match where he was pinned by a Russian opponent. Also winning matches for the U.S. in Greco-Roman competition were Spenser Mango (Flourissant, Mo./USOEC/Gator WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Chas Betts (St. Michael, Minn./USOEC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Mango downed Damian Zuba of Poland in the first round, 2-2, 3-0, before dropping in the second round to Revaz Lashkhi of Georgia, 4-4, 0-7. Betts won his first two matches without surrendering a point to advance to the quarterfinals before losing. In the first round, Betts defeated Alo Toom of Estonia, 3-0, 3-0. In the second round, he beat Mihails Nikitins of Latvia, 5-0, 3-0. Betts then lost in the quarterfinals to Oleg Romankov of Ukraine, 0-5, 2-3. Romankov was defeated in the semifinals, ending any hope of Betts joining the consolation bracket. Also competing for the U.S. on Saturday was Tyler Safratowich (Park Rapids, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Safratowich lost in the first round to Ionel Puscasu of Romania, 3-8, 1-5, but because Puscasu earned a trip to the finals, Safratowich then competed in the consolation bracket. In his first match in the consolation bracket, Safratowich was disqualified for cautions against Rune Nilsson of Denmark. In the match, Safratowich lost the first period, 1-3, but won the next period, 2-1. In the final stanza, Safratowich had outscored Nilsson 5-1, but because he did not score from the reverse lift lock, he was given his third caution and disqualified from the match. "We ran into a lot of experienced wrestlers today," Greco-Roman coach Ike Anderson said. "I thought our guys wrestled well, but they were going against some athletes who have clearly been wrestling nothing but Greco-Roman for years." Four U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers in other divisions weighed in today and will compete on Sunday. Gabe Burak (Colorado Springs, Colo./USOTC) will compete against Elbek Toyiev of Uzbekistan in the first round at 50 kg/110 lbs., Dallas Seavey (Sterling, Alaska) is matched up with Mathias Maasch of Germany at 60 kg/132 lbs., Andy Bisek (Chaska, Minn./USOEC) will face off with In-Soo Yang of Korea in the first round at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Robert Smith (San Ramon, Calif./CYC-Concord) will wrestle an opponent from Vietman at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
