Freestyle champions were crowned at the 2005 USA Wrestling Kids National Championships, held at the Brown County Arena in Green Bay, Wis., Saturday, July 2. The nation's best 9-14 year old wrestlers will be battling for national titles and All-American honors in three age-divisions: Midget (9-10), Novice (11-12) and Schoolboy/girl (13-14). The tournament features the two international styles of wrestling: Greco-Roman and freestyle. This was the final step to the coveted USA Wrestling Kids Triple Crown. Each year, USA Wrestling honors athletes who are able to win national titles at their age-level in all three styles: folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle. The weekend started with 29 athletes in the field who had a chance at the Triple Crown. After the Greco-Roman event ended, the number of eligible athletes dropped to 11. After freestyle, Three Midget athletes won the coveted Triple Crown: - Noah Teaney of Amazonia, Mo. at 60 pounds - Mitch Sliga of Nobelville Ind. at 87 pounds - Dylan Diebitz of West Allis, Wis. at 95 pounds Teaney defeated Jack Bass of Fort Belvoir, Va. in the finals of both styles, defeating him in freestyle 3-1 and in Greco-Roman, 6-1. Sliga pinned Jon Fisher of Wilder, Idaho in the freestyle finals in 1:54. In the Greco-Roman finals, he pinned Mitchell Pohlman of Loyal, Wis. in 1:03. Diebitz scored a 10-0 technical fall over Quinn Faust of Mt. Horab, Wis. in the freestyle finals, 10-0. In Greco-Roman, he scored a 9-4 decision over Chase Nottestad of Loyal, Wis. Five Novice athletes won the Triple Crown this year: - Mark Grey of Rockaway, N.J. at 70 pounds - Eric DeVos of Apple Valley, Minn. at 85 pounds - Taylor Massa of St. Johns, Mich. at 100 pounds - Jason Luster of Powder Springs, Ga. at 112 pounds - Donny Longendyke of Vadnais Heights, Minn. at 140+ pounds Grey scored a 6-3 win over Kevin Norstrem of Brandon, Fla. in the freestyle finals, and also beat Norstrem in the Greco-Roman finals by a 10-1 margin. DeVos scored a 12-2 technical fall win in the freestyle finals over Brandon McBride of Dayton, Idaho. In the Greco-Roman finals, he stopped Walker Slaughter of Danville, Pa. by a 15-0 technical fall. Massa pinned Willie Miklus of Indianola, Iowa in the freestyle finals in 1:59, and also beat Miklus, 9-7 in the Greco-Roman finals. Luster scored a 12-0 technical fall over Jordan Thomas of Gowan, Mich. in the freestyle finals. In the Greco-Roman title match, Luster scored a 14-4 technical fall over Thomas in the gold-medal match. Longendyke pinned Ethan Hayes of Centerville, Ind. in the freestyle finals in 3:13. In Greco-Roman, Longendyke won a three-athlete roundrobin, including a 11-0 technical fall win over runner-up Hayes. One Schoolboy athlete won the Triple Crown this year: - Riley Ewalt of Hubbardstown, Mich. at 95 pounds Ewalt scored a tight 7-5 victory over Dylan Carew of Corallville, Iowa in the freestyle finals, and stopped Carew in the Greco-Roman finals, 12-5. Falling just short of the Triple Crown were Joshua Villani of Washington at 90 pounds in Novice division and Ben Best of Nekoosa, Wis., at 130 pounds in Schoolboy division. Both won national folkstyle and Greco-Roman titles, but were defeated in the freestyle finals. Villani was beaten in the freestyle finals by Dylan Penka of Derby, Kansas, 13-11. In the freestyle finals, Best lost a 10-5 decision to Adam Miller of Sparta, Mich. None of the athletes who won the Triple Crown this year were ever winners of the award in the past. A total of 29 wrestlers were double champions, winners of both the freestyle and Greco-Roman tournament. In the Midget division, eight athletes were double champions, Teaney, Sliga and Diebitz, plus Dylan Lucas of Florida at 55 pounds, Zac Hall of Michigan at 70 pounds, Joey Mamolenti of Indiana at 75 pounds, Dylan Milonas of New Jersey at 80 pounds and Tommy Longendyke of Minnesota at 103 pounds. In the Novice division, 10 athletes won freestyle and Greco-Roman, Grey, DeVos, Massa, Luster and Longendyke, plus Alex Dieringer of Wisconsin at 80 pounds, Jared Kust of Wisconsin at 95 pounds, Devin Peterson of Wisconsin at 105 pounds, Bruce McWilliams of Iowa at 140 pounds and Tucker Erickson of Montana at 140+++ pounds. In the Schoolboy division, 11 athletes were double champions. This included Ewalt, plus Cody Brewer of Missouri at 70 pounds, Clark Glass of Florida at 75 pounds, Jesse Thielke of Wisconsin at 80 pounds, Cody Tyler of Missouri at 90 pounds, Josh Kindig of Pennsylvania at 105 pounds, Nick Moore of Iowa at 110 pounds, Brian Plummer of Michigan at 115 pounds, Ryan Garringer of Illinois at 120 pounds, Sterling Hecox of Illinois at 165 pounds and Trever Spude of Wisconsin at 185 pounds. A total of 508 athletes entered the freestyle competition.
