The morning session of wrestling has completed, with the first bout of the best-of-three Championship Series at the World Team Trials in Ames, Iowa, June 19. Winners in all 21 weight classes take a one match to none lead in their series. The winners of the best-of-three series qualify for the U.S. team at the World Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Sept. 26-Oct.2. In men's freestyle, all seven national champions won the first bout of their series. Two of the bouts went the full three periods before the U.S. nationals champion won the match. At 66 kg/145.5 lbs., U.S. Nationals champion Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) defeated Jared Lawrence (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm), 2-0, 0-2, 2-0 to take a one-match lead. Bono is a coach and competed for host Iowa State, and had a strong fan following during his close battle. Bono scored his winning points in the third period on an exposure from the leg clinch in overtime, as the match was tied 0-0 at the end of the period. At 84 kg/185 lbs., Mo Lawal (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) needed all three periods to defeat Lee Fullhart (Blacksburg, Va./Gator WC), 1-1, 1-0, 1-0. In the deciding third period, Lawal scored his winning point when Fullhart stepped out of bounds with one minute left.Lawal leads series, one match to none In Greco-Roman, two of the national champions were beaten in the opening match, trailing now 1-0 in the series. At 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Glenn Garrison (Colorado Springs, Colo/U.S. Army) stopped Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio/USOEC/Gator WC), 5-3, 5-1 in the opening bout. Garrison was third at the U.S. Nationals this year. Garrison leads the series, one match to none At 74 kg/163 lbs., two-time World Team member T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) pinned Darryl Christian (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), in 1:38 of the first period. Christian has won the U.S. Nationals for two straight years, while Dantzler was third at the U.S. Nationals this year. Dantzler goes into the second match leading the series 1-0. Three national champions were beaten in the women's division in the first match of the best-of-three series. At 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Jenny Wong (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) edged U.S. Nationals champion Sara Fulp-Allen(El Granada, Calif./Menlo College), 0-1, 1-0, 1-0 in the first match. Wong dropped down from 51 kg/112.25 lbs., where she was a 2003 World bronze medalist. Wong leads series, one match to none At 63 kg/138.75 lbs., 2004 Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann (Iowa City, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) edged Alaina Berube (Escanaba, Mich./New York AC), in a three-period thriller, 6-0, 2-2, 4-3. This event is McMann's first since winning her medal in Athens, Greece last summer. McMann leads the series, one match to none At 67 kg/147.5 lbs., U.S. Nationals runner-up Katie Downing, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids) pinned two-time World champion Kristie Marano (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), in 30 seconds to take a one-match lead. Marano has defeated Downing in their previous meetings, including Special Wrestle-offs for the 2002 and 2003 U.S. World Teams. Men's freestyle wrestlers who were 2005 U.S. National champions with one-match leads include Sammie Henson (St. Louis, Mo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Michael Lightner (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Joe Williams (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 74 kg/163 lbs., Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Tolly Thompson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Women wrestlers who were 2005 U.S. Nationals champions holding a one-match lead include Stephanie Murata (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., Sally Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. At 55 kg/121 lbs., U.S. Nationals runner-up Marcie Van Dusen, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids) def. Chelynne Pringle, Hugo, Minn. (Minn. Storm), 2-2, 1-0 to take a one-match lead. The winner does not qualify for World Team, and must face national champion Tina George (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) in a special wrestle-off at a date and site to be determined. George took an extension on her series due to injury.
