The wrestling was outstanding and competitive in the morning session of the Challenge Tournament portion of the USA Wrestling World Team Trials in Ames, Iowa, June 18. However, there were few upsets, as the wrestlers expected to advance were able to win their bouts. Only three No. 1 seeds among the 21 weight classes lost matches in the session, which went through the Challenge Tournament semifinal bouts. In men's freestyle, Eric Akin (Lincoln, Neb./Cyclone WC) defeated No. 1 seed Matt Azevedo (San Luis Obispo, Calif./Sunkist Kids), 7-2, 2-0 in the semifinals. Akin was a member of the 1997 U.S. World Team, but has not wrestled all season. Azevedo was the 2005 U.S. Nationals runner-up. In men's Greco-Roman, the top seed was defeated at 60 kg/132 lbs., when Willie Madison( Metairie, La./USOEC/Gator WC) edged U.S. Nationals runner-up Jacob Hey (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force), 1-1, 2-1. In women's freestyle, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, Tina Pihl (Colorado Springs, Colo./Team Dream) upset No. 1 Sharon Jacobson (El Cajon, Calif./USOEC), 7-3, 6-2. All of the Challenge Tournament finals will be held on Saturday evening, starting at 5:00 p.m. Central Time. The winners of Saturday night's Challenge Tournament advances to Sunday's Championship Series, where they battle the 2005 U.S. Nationals champion in a best-of-three series for the spot on the 2005 U.S. World Team. The morning session marked the return of 2004 Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann (Iowa City, Iowa/Sunkist Kids), who won both of her matches at 138.75 pounds. McMann pinned Laurin Daniels (Vashin Island, Wash./Menlo College) in 24 seconds in the first match, then won her semifinal bout against Brandy Rosenbrock (Harrison, Mich./USOEC), 7-0, 6-3. McMann draws Rachel Billerback (Pflugerville, Texas/Missouri Valley) in the Challenge Tournament finals. A regular rivalry was continued in the 84 kg/185 lbs. Challenge Tournament semifinals in men's freestyle, when Chris Pendleton (San Jose, Calif./Gator WC) edged Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis./Sunkist Kids), 3-0, 0-6, 4-2. Pendleton, who wrestled for Oklahoma State, defeated Askren, from the Univ. of Missouri, in the NCAA Div. I finals the last two years. Pendleton also had a win over Askren at the University World Team Trials last month in Colorado Springs, Colo. Pendleton moves to the Challenge Tournament finals, where he faces 2004 Olympic Trials runner-up Lee Fullhart, Blacksburg, Va. (Gator WC). The Greco-Roman tournament included the first major event under the new FILA international rules for the sport, which includes much more par terre (mat) wrestling. The 74 kg/163 lbs. division had some great action, as the top seed Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) and No. 3 seed T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) advanced to the Challenge Tournament finals. Sieracki, a past U.S. World Team member, competed at 84 kg/185 lbs. all season, but dropped back down to this weight class for the World Team Trials. He earned the No. 1 ranking in this division last year, although the U.S. did not qualify to send anybody to the Olympic Games at the weight class. He has a career-long rivalry with Dantzler. Dantzler, who executes exciting throws from the mat, seems to have a style that is enhanced by the new rules. Dantzler pinned both of his opponents in the morning session. In the quarterfinals, he pinned Carson Bernard (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at the 1:05 mark of the second period. In the semifinals, he pinned U.S. Nationals runner-up Jacob Volkmann (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) in 1:44 of the first period.
