Marcicki wins gold, as U.S. team takes fifth at Brandenburg FILA Cadet Cup in Germany

Colin Marcicki of Michigan won a gold medal, helping lead the U.S. FILA Cadet team to a fifth-place team finish at the Brandenburg International Cadet Cup of freestyle wrestling, held in Luckenwalde Germany, June 10-12. Marcicki won four matches on the way to the title, including a victory over Yashar Jamali of Germany in the gold-medal finals at 54 kg/119 lbs. The other opponents that he defeated on the way to the title were Andre Gregorski of Germany, Rico Richter of Germany and Dmitri Berthelard of France. Marcicki was named Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament for his achievement. Marcicki was second at the 2005 USA Wrestling FILA Cadet Nationals in freestyle earlier this year. The U.S. won three total medals, and had five athletes place in the top 10 of their weight class. Poland won the team title, followed by Germany, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States. There were 12 nations represented in the tournament. Winning a silver medal at 42 kg/92.5 lbs. was Grant Sutter of Wisconsin. Sutter had a 3-1 record in the competition, losing in the championship match to Munir-Recep Atkas of Turkey. He earned a spot in the finals with a victory over Phillip Herzog of Germany. Placing third at 100 kg/220.25 lbs. was Christopher Lewis, California,, who competed in a six-athlete field. He opened with a loss to eventual champion Nik Matuchin of Germany, and was awarded one of the two bronze medals at the division. Other U.S. placewinners were Brian Reisenauer of North Dakota, who was fifth at 92.5 pounds, and Bill Barheisel of Illinois, who was fifth at 187.25 pounds. The athletes on this competition and training tour qualified through the USA Wrestling FILA Cadet National Championships. The U.S. team was coached by CC Fisher and Wil Kelly.
