For five straight seasons and six of the last seven years, Kerry McCoy of the New York AC was the No. 1 freestyle super heavyweight in the nation. He made two Olympic teams. He won a 2003 World silver medal. He competed in all the major events. McCoy is no longer competing, so this year was expected to be the time for veteran Tolly Thompson of the Sunkist Kids to attempt to take over the division. Thompson was second behind McCoy in the 2004 Olympic Trials and he has taken advantage of the opportunity so far. He won the U.S. Nationals title, his second career title going back to his 1998 triumph. Thompson has been wrestling overseas as much as possible, adding to his already long list of international achievements. His focus is on getting the chance to show what he can do at the World level, and winning the World Team Trial;s will allow that to happen. It may also help that Thompson is an Iowa native, and will be among the fan favorites on the mat in Ames. He is a big, strong athlete with good technical skills and confidence in his abilities. He needs to win two matches in the Championship Series to reach that No. 1 position for the first time. The talented college star pushing Thompson is NCAA champion Steve Mocco of the New York AC. Mocco won a 2003 NCAA title for the Univ. of Iowa and took an Olympic redshirt year in 2004 to pursue the Olympic dream. Mocco won a number of international matches, including a silver medal at an all-star event in Russia, losing only to a World champion. He was second at the 2004 U.S. Nationals to McCoy. However, in the Olympic Team Trials last year, Thompson beat Mocco to earn a spot in the finals. This year, Mocco transferred to Oklahoma State and won another NCAA individual title. He made the U.S. Nationals finals against Thompson, but was pinned during a competitive battle. Mocco also entered the University World Team Trials and won a gold medal, earning a spot in the World University Games. His focus in Ames will be to get another chance at Thompson. The fans in Iowa might give him a hard time during this event for deciding to transfer from the Hawkeye program. Mocco tends to bring excitement to wrestling wherever he goes. There is an intriguing athlete who has yet to test himself on the U.S. Senior national circuit, 2005 NCAA runner-up Cole Konrad of the Univ. of Minnesota. Konrad skipped the U.S. Nationals in order to wrestle at the Pan American Championships, where he won a gold medal and defeated 1998 World Champion Alexis Rodriguez of Cuba along the way. Konrad has wrestled Mocco in folkstyle a number of times, but it will be interesting to see how the match might go if they are competing in freestyle. Konrad is a big, strong, tall athlete who is just coming into his own as a wrestler, and could do some serious damage at the World Team Trials. The rest of the field at this division is still developing, attempting to put themselves in position to be able to beat either Thompson or Mocco. Billy Blunt of the Sunkist Kids has stepped up his freestyle performance in recent seasons, and is a strong threat after placing third at the U.S. Nationals. Blunt won a bronze medal at the Sunkist Kids International in the fall, and was fourth at the 2004 U.S. Nationals. College wrestlers Ty Watterson of Orange Crush and Mike Faust of the Sunkist Kids are also making an impact at this division. Watterson was second at the University Nationals this past season, coming out of the Oregon State program, then placed fourth at the 2005 U.S. Nationals. Faust was originally at the Univ. of Pennsylvania, but took an Olympic redshirt year in 2004, when he trained full-time at the Olympic Training Center. This year, he competed for Virginia Tech Univ., and won a gold medal at the Sunkist Kids International, as well as placing fifth at the 2005 U.S. Nationals. Many expect great things from Pat Cummins of the New York AC, who was a NCAA runner-up for Penn State. Cummins was a bit disappointed with his sixth place finish in Las Vegas and is looking for another chance to move up the ladder during the World Team Trials. Cummins was sixth at the 2004 Olympic Team Trials as well. The final athlete to qualify for the field by placing seventh at the U.S. Nationals was Michael Irving, an athlete from Florida who competed at NAIA Cumberland College. Irving was second at the 2004 Sunkist Kids International Open, and is making progress nationally. The final athlete who will be entered into the field is Ryan Fuller, who competed for Iowa in college and won the Northern Plains Regionals title. Many fans would like to see a Thompson vs. Mocco finals series at this division, a rivalry which many expect to go forward into the next few seasons. Mocco will have to win the Challenge Tournament first, and may end up having another showdown with Konrad, this time in freestyle. One of the questions to answer will be which athletes step up and try to derail Mocco's quest for another shot at Thompson. This weight class could end up being very interesting, and even exciting, to watch. 2005 U.S. NATIONALS RESULTS AT 120 KG/264.5 LBS. 1st - Tolly Thompson, Cedar Falls, Iowa (Sunkist Kids) pin Steve Mocco, N.
