Two of the leading organizations in the wrestling community, USA Wrestling and the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), are asking their members and others in the wrestling community to support the College Sports Council. The College Sports Council, a Washington, D.C. based non-profit organization, has been a leader in the Title IX reform effort, and a strong advocate for the protection and development of Olympic sports programs. USA Wrestling is the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States, and is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee and the international wrestling federation FILA. The NWCA is a professional organization dedicated to serve and provide leadership for the advancement of all levels of wrestling, with primary emphasis on scholastic and collegiate programs. The College Sports Council seeks the support of individuals and organizations to help it continue its ongoing campaign to save college teams and restore fairness to the regulations that govern Title IX compliance. "USA Wrestling is proud to work closely with the College Sports Council, and we encourage all within wrestling to support its programs," said Rich Bender, USA Wrestling Executive Director. "We ask wrestling individuals, as well as clubs and other organizations, to make a donation to the College Sports Council at this time. It will be a tremendous investment in protecting wrestling programs for the future." "The NWCA has an absolute belief that the College Sports Council is playing a pivotal role in developing alternatives in Title IX enforcement strategies," said Mike Moyer, NWCA Executive Director. "This protects women without harming men. We encourage the wrestling community to financially support the College Sports Council during this important time in their development." This is a crucial time for those seeking to protect wrestling and other Olympic sports. A recent announcement from Office of Civil Rights has provided new guidance for Title IX compliance through surveys. This is considered by many a step forward towards a more common sense approach to providing athletic opportunities and preserving Olympic sports programs including wrestling teams. However, there are organizations and individuals that have a special interest in reinstating the old Title IX enforcement system, which relied upon gender quotas that discriminated against male athletes. These groups are busy lobbying and executing a public relations campaign calling for a roll back of the recent progress in Title IX reform. The College Sports Council needs increased resources in order to execute its own public relations effort to defend the recent changes. In addition, the College Sports Council is also involved in a number of legal battles designed to change Title IX regulatory policies, which will help protect Olympic sports from elimination. "Now is the time for the Olympic sports community to step up and support the College Sports Council," said Bender. "No matter what you can contribute now, you will be making a big difference in helping save wrestling." The College Sports Council is a national coalition of coaches, parents and athletes, devoted to preserving and promoting opportunities for students to participate in sports. The College Sports Council seeks to reform the regulatory requirements of Title IX so that the law can continue to protect women from discrimination, without harming men. Eric Pearson is the Executive Director of the College Sports Council. Pearson was the head wrestling coach at Princeton Univ. and was involved in the effort to save the program there. He has been a leading voice in Title IX reform for many years. "We could not have accomplished the recent common sense reforms without the generous support from the Olympic sports community. However, now, more than ever, we need everyone to step up again and make donations to the CSC so that we can fight the efforts by trial lawyer groups and gender quota lobbyists to roll back these hard won gains," said Pearson Among the organizations that are members of the College Sports Council are the College Gymnastics Association, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, the National Wrestling Coaches Association, and the U.S. Track Coaches Association.
