STILLWATER, OKLA. - Troy Nickerson of Chenango Forks, N.Y. has been named as the national winner of the 2005 Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. The Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award is presented by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame annually to a high school senior. The award program is based equally on outstanding wrestling success, scholastic achievement and citizenship or community service. This marks the 10th year that this respected award has been awarded to a deserving high school star. Nickerson attends Chenango Forks High School in Chenango Forks, N.Y. He will be honored during the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Honors Weekend in Stillwater, Okla., June 3-4. He competed at 125 pounds this year. Nickerson was the first five-time state champion in New York history with a career record of 213-6. Nickerson has a 3.7 GPA. He will attend Cornell Univ. in the fall. Nickerson was a double champion at the 2004 ASICS Junior National Championships, and was Outstanding Wrestler in both styles. He was a National High School Champion this year. He won two Cadet National Greco-Roman titles, and was 2003 Cadet National freestyle champion. "This is a huge honor," said Nickerson. "I met Dave Schultz in Atlanta at the 1995 World Championships and I am a huge fan of his. To win an award that is in his honor is a great achievement for me. To be involved with the other candidates, who are such great wrestlers and students, is also exciting for me. I am thrilled to get this award." Nickerson considers academics and community service an important part of his personal goals and values. "Academics is one of the main reasons I chose Cornell for college," he said. "I have aspirations of becoming a doctor someday. I believe it will be a place where I can reach that goal, as well as win a few NCAA titles, as well." "We are extremely fortunate to have a young man of the caliber of Troy Nickerson to acknowledge as the national winner of this award," said Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. "On behalf of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum and its Board of Governors, I want to congratulate Troy, his family, coaches, teammates, and teachers on his success," Nickerson was selected as the Northeast Regional winner for the award. The Hall of Fame honors five outstanding scholar-athletes on the Regional level through this outstanding program. Four other Regional winners were considered for the national award. They were: Cesar Grajales of Brandon High School in Brandon, Fla. (Southeast) Brent Metcalf of Davison High School in Davison, Mich. (Midwest) Jared Rosholt of Ponca City High School in Ponca, Okla. (Central) Cyler Sanderson of Wasatch High School in Heber City, Utah (West) The regional champions were selected from a pool of state winners, which were honored by the Hall of Fame in every state earlier this spring. "I want to thank the selection committee for doing such an outstanding job of selecting the 48 state-by-state winners and the five regional winners of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence award for 2005. As a sport, wrestling has as its greatest resource its participants. These winning student -athletes represent a balanced approach to success in sport and life," said Smith. This awards program is named in the honor of the late Dave Schultz, an Olympic and World champion, who set an example for excellence, both on and off the mat.
