Editor's Note: The 2005 Canadian Senior National Wrestling Championships will be held at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Center in Renfrew, Ontario, Canada, May 13-15. Canada's best men's freestyle, women's freestyle and men's Greco-Roman wrestlers will participate in their annual national championships. Freestyle competition is set for Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14. The Greco-Roman competition is set for Sunday, May 15. Leslee Laverdure, who publishes the Calgary University Wrestling Club Newsletter, has written the following preview of the women's and men's freestyle competition. Seniors Weight Class Previews: Women 48 kg This weight Class will not be as deep as last year. Carol Huyhn (SFU) is the likely favorite. Krista Wells has won five tournaments this season. A disappointing loss in the University finals will hopefully fire her up here. 51 Kg Olympian at 48Kg Lyndsay Belilse has returned to this weight class and Erica Sharp has moved back down from 55Kg. These two have split wins this year, in two different international meets. Both will be extremely tough internationally for Canada. Many look forward to a dynamite final. Also here is Teresa Piotrowski , the 2003 National Champion. 55 Kg A traditionally powerful weight class for Canada a few top faces have changed this year, except for tournament favorite and Olympic silver medalist Tonya Verbeek (Brock). After a tremendous 2004 Verbeek missed a good part of 2005, where a number of newcomers began to distinguish themselves this season. Brit Laverdure is having a great year as university Champion already, and with a couple of international medals. McDougall enters the tournament after winning her second straight junior national title. There are a number of other competitive wrestlers here which will make 55kg fun to watch. 59 Kg The top two wrestlers here are hard to dispute. Breanne Graham and Emily Richardson have consistently topped this field for a few years. However, there is a depth of young athletes that are very strong here, including Ellen Macro of McMaster, who upset Richardson in the university national finals. Both Bouchard and Barker will also be very competitive here. 63 Kg UCWC's Helen Hennick broke through and won the Senior National Championship in 2004 at 63kg. She has followed that up with six international medals since then. Viola Yanik (Sask) won the 2004 Olympic trials and placed 5th in Athens. Also a threats are Tara Hedican (Guelph) and Megan Dolan (Brock). 67 Kg Martine Dugrenier (Montreal) won the Senior nationals last year, beating Yanik in the finals. She also won the University World Championships and has got to be seen as the clear favorite here. Megan Buydens (Sask) is coming off of a strong performance as university national champion. There are a number of younger wrestlers whom should be competitive for that third spot on the podium. Vanessa Wilson is coming off an excellent second half of the season and is hoping to surprise some people. 72 Kg Many of the top wrestlers at this weight (including Olympian Christine Nordhagen) will not be competing at this year's nationals. This should leave Ohenawa Akuffo on top of a fairly scarce field of competitors. Seniors Weight Class Previews: Men 55 kg There are a number of athletes from last year's Olympic Trials and nationals whom will not compete or have moved up in weight. The key question here is if Mischa Japaridize (Mont) does compete. Most believe he will, and will be the favorite at 55 Kg. Coming off of a strong season and a surprise victory over Mischa is Jamie Macari (Brock). Huy Nguyen will compete at this weight also and is hoping to make a splash on the senior level. 60 Kg Guivi Sissaouri (Montreal) has dominated this weight for the past decade and may not compete at this years nationals. If he doesn't look for Saeed Azarbayjani (Brock) to move into the top spot, with young stars Tim Wadsworth (Mont), John Pineda, and Jesse Arnett (both from BC) in the mix. 66Kg Arguably the deepest weight class in Canada and the US, there seems to always be a ton of quality guys around this weight. Tournament favorite Evan McDonald (Brock) knows he has a line of guys gunning for him. Last year saw two of Evan's teammates in the finals, but there are many more good wrestlers in the weight. Jeremy Podlog has a strong history at this weight and has been wrestling very well lately. Joe Bentley also has had some key matches this season, highlighted by a win over Ryan Weiker (national silver medalist) at Guelph. BC has strength here in a number of guys, as does the rest of Ontario. 74 kg Olympic champion Daniel Igali is not going to compete at this years seniors, which changes this division substantially. His top rival Hunyadi is also a question mark, which may leave journeyman Danny Einhorn as the new top man. Also don't be surprised if some of the depth from 66kg doesn't filter up here. Behind Einhorn whom has had a strong season is some young wrestling blood which includes Margettis (Montreal), Alves (Edmonton), and Adamson (Saskatoon). 84 kg This is also a weight class that will change this year. Nick Ugoalah tore his pectoral muscle earlier in the season and will not wrestle. This leaves Carl Rainville as the favorite, although he has not been seen competing much this year. BC has some strength here with Cross and Banihashemi, but both may not be in top form due to various reasons. This is a weight where a young up-and-coming wrestler may be able to break through and place well. 96 Kg Dean Schmeichel has won four Senior national titles here and he returns to the nationals as the favorite. The field has not changed very much in the past season. Key competitors include Zilberman (Montreal), Sodhi (SFU), and Neufeldt (Brock), and of course Dean's teammate Nico Jacobs, whom competed this summer in Athens for Namibia. 120 Kg Ari Taub has been the busiest hwt this season and he has established himself as a person to beat. Look for many of the same past rivals to return here with a few quality additions. Arjan Bullar is a solid up-and-coming Junior Champion, Jamie Cox (Guelph) has moved up from 96Kg and has competed well, and Greg Edgelow (SFU) is expected to compete, which may make heavyweight an entertaining weight to watch.
