Through a generous donation made by Ronald L. Engel, in memory of his late father Andrew Engel, 15 wrestling clubs across the United States received ASICS wrestling shoes for their underprivileged athletes. This program was inspired by Ron Engel, a wrestler in USA Wrestling's Veteran's Division and an active leader in the sport. Engel saw a need to help wrestling athletes less fortunate to obtain the proper equipment to participate in the sport. He named the program in honor of his late father who Ron said inspired him during his many years of athletic activities. Working with National Sponsor ASICS, USA Wrestling was able to support 335 kids with ASICS wrestling shoes from the Engel donation. "Through this generous donation from Mr. Engel, several programs across the United States greatly benefited by receiving ASICS wrestling shoes," said Mark Scott, USA Wrestling Director of State Services. "This donation of funds to provide ASICS wrestling shoes demonstrates how much Mr. Engel believes in youth wrestling programs and cares about making the sport better for so many." Those USA Wrestling Clubs receiving ASICS shoes through the Andrew Engel Memorial Charitable Wrestling Shoe Program were: * Wesley Community Center Amarillo, TX * Chicago Nights Wrestling Club, Chicago, IL * Arizona Elite Wrestling Club, Chandler, AZ * Shamrock Wrestling Club, Louisville, KY * Franklin County Wrestling Club, Frankfort, KY * Rising Stars Wrestling Club, Danbury, CT * Fairmont Rough Riders Youth Wrestling Club, Joliet, IL * Orchard Wrestling Club, Paulsboro, NJ * Fort Lewis Wrestling Club, Durango, CO * Orofino Strikers Wrestling Club, Orofino, ID * LaRue Wrestling Club, Hodgenville, KY * Beatrice Wrestling Club, Beatrice, NE * Colorado School for the Deaf & Blind, Colorado Springs, CO * Southside Scramblers Wrestling Club, Chicago, IL * Covina Wrestling Club, Covina, CA. Engel provided the following story that inspired his generous donation. "In about 1985, I was the JV coach at Cupertino High School," wrote Engle. "Dr. Richard Popejoy was the head coach and we were in a tournament in Vacaville at Vacaville High School. One of the schools we wrestled was Oakland Tech, which is an inter-city school in Oakland, Calif. The head coach there, who is still the head coach, is Ashlee Sherman, an alternate in Greco-Roman for the Montreal Olympics. He is a highly respected coach, well-liked and respected by everyone. Oakland Tech as an urban school consisting of predominantly minority students who are not very well-off economically." "As we were wrestling Oakland Tech, their wrestlers would get off the mat after wrestling, take off their shoes, and pass them on to the next wrestler (or the wrestler after the next wrestler because they didn't have enough shoes for everyone on the team). Our wrestlers, from an upper-middle class Silicon Valley school, thought that this was unsual until I explained to them that these wrestlers wanted to be out there so badly that they were willing to share shoes in order to compete. Our wrestlers did not understand that it was about not having enough money to buy shoes. After the tournament, I sent an apology note to Ashlee and promised myself if I was ever in a situation to be able to to provide the funds to buy wrestlers shoes who would not otherwise be able to afford to do so, I would do it," he wrote. "The naming it after my father came from a story he once told me about when he was in World War II (my parents are from Hungary and both survivors of the Holocaust). Rather than being shipped directly to a concentration camp (Jewish males 18 to 45), my father was sent to a Jewish work camp on the Russian front. Essentially they worked you to death as opposed to send you to the extermination camps. My father explained to me how important shoes were during that whole process which is why I had mentioned putting my dad's name on the program," said Engel. USA Wrestling again thanks Mr. Engel for his inspiration and willingness to support so many wrestling athletes across the country.
