Full Time Coaches to Be Hired for Women's Soccer, Women's Lacrosse and Wrestling MONTCLAIR, N.J. - Montclair State University announced today that its wrestling and men's lacrosse sports teams would be reinstated as varsity athletic programs, starting with the fall 2005 season. The University's decision to reclassify the programs came as a result of a successful joint effort on the part of MSU and its many supporters across New Jersey to raise the private funding needed to strengthen and sustain the University's intercollegiate sports program. In addition to reclassifying two of the five teams that were downgraded to club status early in the year, the new funding will enable MSU to hire full-time coaches for women's soccer, women's lacrosse, and wrestling, along with an additional athletic trainer. "The outpouring of support for our athletic programs is extremely gratifying," said Dr. Susan A. Cole, University president. "It was heartfelt, spontaneous and generous to the point where we feel confident that we have sufficient funds to operate an excellent 18 team intercollegiate program over the next several years," Cole added. The private funding will allow the University to upgrade the programs in several areas, said Dr. Karen L. Pennington, vice president for Student Development and Campus Life. "For our teams to compete - and succeed - we believe that certain essentials need to be in place: full-time coaches, assistant coaches, a full-time athletic trainer, appropriate transportation, new uniforms as needed, adequate recruiting budgets, and the availability of site managers, academic advisers, and facilities." Pennington said that the University will immediately begin nationwide searches for the new full-time sports personnel. The University had announced in late January the reclassification of five of its 21 athletic programs from varsity to club status. These teams included wrestling, men's lacrosse, women's tennis and men's and women's cross country. University officials said that the change was necessary to maintain its tradition of excellence in the face of severe fiscal constraints. At the time, the University stated: "A number of affected coaches, athletes and supporters have been attempting to raise funds…to reinstate the programs. MSU will consider any proposals that will enable the University to annually sustain both the re-classified teams and entire sports programs at MSU's standard of excellence." "I am thrilled for the kids on the team, to have a place to compete and get a good education. They will be able to continue on the road they have begun here. This would not have happened without the support from the wrestling alumni, wrestling fans, coaches and key people from the university," said MSU wrestling coach Joe Sabol to TheMat.com. Beyond the reinstatement of the wrestling and lacrosse teams announced today, many of the athletes associated with men's and women's cross country teams are continuing to compete in the University's indoor and outdoor track program. Women's tennis will remain at club status. "We deeply appreciate the financial contributions and commitments so many have made to enable us to restore and strengthen MSU's sports program. We are heartened to know that when fiscal realities are such that we can no longer fund certain worthwhile programs, our many friends across New Jersey will step in to help," said Dr. Cole.
