In an effort to support its bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games, the NYC2012 Committee is asking the international sporting community to come together and sign an online petition in favor of the city of New York. Six thousand supporters have signed the NYC2012 petition already. To show support for New York City's bid and the nation's Olympic movement, go to http://www.nyc2012.com/en/petition.html With less than 80 days until the International Olympic Committee votes on the host site, the bid for New York City is gaining momentum. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Deputy Mayor and NYC2012 Founder, Daniel Doctoroff made a presentation to a meeting of Olympic sport leaders in Berlin last weekend. Press reports from Berlin indicate that New York and London made the best presentations. The online petition is in support of New York's bid, as well as the building of a New York Sports and Convention Center. The stadium would host the Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies and track and field events. Without the approval of the Olympic Stadium before the IOC vote, New York City would not receive the bid. "With just one approval remaining, we are closer than ever to fulfilling the commitment that Governor Pataki and Mayor Bloomberg made to the IOC Evaluation Commission when they visited here in February that the Olympic Stadium project would be fully approved on schedule before the IOC vote," NYC2012 Executive Director Jay L. Kriegel. "The final approval could come in the next few weeks, but it will not happen without your help." According to the NYC2012 Committee, holding the Olympic Games in New York City would bring $11 billion of economic activity and 120,000 person-years of jobs. The Games would also lead to the creation of over 800 acres of new and enhanced parkland in New York City, revitalize the City's waterfront and be a catalyst for positive development in all five of the boroughs. "New York's passion for sport is contagious," Kriegel said. "The excitement of the Games would be amplified on New York's unforgettable stage."
