The St. Cloud State University wrestling team and head coach Steve Grimit will benefit from new recruiting initiatives, which have been put into place for the upcoming 2005-06 campaign. These initiatives are design to help the Huskies maintain their long tradition of excellence in the sport of wrestling, which dates back to 1949-50 and has produced 35 All-America performances since 1980. The top news for the upcoming season is that SCSU's wrestling scholarship amount will increase nearly 70 percent. SCSU will also now be able to offer several in-state tuition waivers to out-of-state athletes, which will help the Huskies' recruiting potential in areas beyond Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota. These measures will hopefully pay recruiting dividends for Coach Grimit and the Huskies in the future. "St. Cloud State has really made a renewed commitment to it wrestling program with the increase of scholarship funding and the in-state tuition waivers," Coach Grimit said. "These factors will certainly help improve our ability to recruit in Minnesota and throughout the United State." Grimit, who begins his 13th season as head coach at SCSU in 2005-06, guided the Huskies to a ninth place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in 2002-03 and he has gained seven top 20 finishes at the NCAA championships since 1994-95. "This is really one of the most positive things that has happened for our program in recent years," Grimit said of the new initiatives at SCSU. "Minnesota and the upper midwest states have some of the nation's top junior college and high school wrestlers and wrestling programs. These new initiatives will help us recruit more of those top student-athletes from this region. "In addition, with the in-state tuition waivers for out-of-state athletes, SCSU will really be able to recruit at a nationwide level," Grimit noted. SCSU's wrestling history has enjoyed top levels of excellence, which includes numerous top 10 national finishes. In 1968 and 1972, SCSU grads Dave Hazewinkel and Jim Hazewinkel were both members of the USA Olympic team and in 1995 SCSU's Gene Hanemann won an NCAA title at 158-pounds.
