Three wrestlers win double title at FILA Cadet Nationals; Ballweg named Outstanding Wrestler

Evanston, Ill. - Matt Ballweg of Iowa was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the FILA Cadet Freestyle National Championships on Saturday afternoon following his gold-medal performance at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Ballweg defeated Alec Ortiz of Arizona, 6-0, 4-0 in the finals match. Overall, Ballweg won eight matches in the deepest weight class in the tournament. He defeated Greco-Roman champion Esai Dominguez of Iowa in pool competition. Three wrestlers won double titles this weekend, gold medals in both Greco-Roman and freestyle: David Taylor of Ohio at 42 kg/92.5 lbs., Jon Reader of Michigan at 69 kg/152 lbs. and Brent Chriswell of Washington at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. Taylor dominated Grant Sutter of Wisconsin in the finals, 7-0, 6-0. Reader, who was named the Greco-Roman tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler, defeated Kirk Smith of Idaho, 3-0, 3-0, in the finals. He won eight matches in the tournament, two of them by fall. Reader also won a freestyle title last year at this tournament. Chriswell moved up one weight class from where he won his Greco-Roman title. He downed Patrick Carey of Arizona, 6-0, 2-0, in the finals. The only state with multiple champions was Ohio, which saw Taylor and Coby Boyd win gold medals. Boyd defeated Brandon Precin of Illinois, 1-0, 1-1, in a close gold-medal match at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. At 46 kg/101.25 lbs., multiple-time USA Wrestling age-group national champion Riley Adamson won the title with a pin over Greco-Roman champion Andy Pokorny of Nebraska in the second period. Adamson won five matches in the tournament, three of them by fall. Brandon Davis of North Carolina won the title at 50 kg/110 lbs. with a 4-0, 4-0 win over Ryan Fields of Ohio in the finals. Davis won eight matches overall. Alex Meade of Delaware won his first FILA Cadet national crown with a 3-0, 6-3 win over Collin Marcicki of Michigan at 54 kg/119 lbs. Meade dominated his opponents in all six matches. At 76 kg/167.5 lbs., Scott Giffin of New Jersey pinned Zachary Giesen of Oregon in the first period for the gold medal. Christopher Lewis of California closed out his national title run with a 1-0, 1-1 win over Jordan Johnson of Illinois at 100 kg/220.25 lbs. Lewis won both of his pool matches before advancing to the finals. Top three place winners in the FILA Cadet National Championships qualify those athletes for their respective state's Cadet Nationals Team.
