On March 26 in Laramie, Wyo., the late Sarah Dawn Tolin of Casper, Wyo. was recognized as the winner of the annual Andy McWilliams award, which is given each year at the USA Wrestling Rocky Mountain Regional Championships. USWOA mat official David Stormo of New Mexico presented the award, which was awarded posthumously on her behalf to her parents, wrestling officials Don and Vickie Tolin, of Wyoming. Tolin, a student at the Univ. of Oklahoma, passed away earlier this spring. She was a competitive wrestler who competed on the Senior level, and participated in USA Wrestling's programs for many years as a youth. During her career, Sarah was very active at the Rocky Mountain Regionals. While a high school wrestler from Casper, Wyo., Tolin competed against boys in the Rocky Mountain Junior Regionals for two years against boys. In addition, she also entered the women's Senior division at the tournament and won the gold medal four different times, including receiving the Outstanding Wrestler award. During the tournaments, she also helped out any way possible. She helped time and score at the tables, acted as a runner for bout sheets, and helped in pairing as she was a licensed pairing official. She also served as mat chairman or judge when needed, since she was a licensed mat official She also helped coach wrestlers at the tournament, both in the Junior and Senior divisions, as she was a Bronze Level Coach. Sarah Tolin also enjoyed photography and took lots of wrestling pictures during the competitions.
The Rocky Mountain Regional Championship Wrestling Tournament is a special event to people from the region. To many, especially the pairing officials, mat officials, coaches, wrestlers, and volunteers, this event has become a family reunion. One big part of the "reunion celebration" is the presentation of a special plaque annually… called the Andy McWilliams Award. This honor is given to volunteers who have dedicated themselves to the total promotion of our sport of wrestling. Andy McWilliams was a dear friend of wrestling. When he learned he was dying, Andy dedicated the last year of his life to wrestling and becoming an official. Andy passed away in 1984, and we remember his warm friendship and courage to this day. The Rocky Mountain Regional event began honoring an official annually in 1985, in Andy's name. Since then, the award has grown to encompass all of the areas of volunteerism in the USA Wrestling Rocky Mountain family. This volunteer epitomizes what this proud wrestling community stands for - total dedication to the youth of Rocky Mountain Wrestling. This award is unique within USA Wrestling in that the selection of a new recipient each year is made only through a committee comprised of all the past winners of the Andy McWilliams Award meeting annually at the Rocky Mountain Regional Championships. Past winners of the Andy McWilliams Award include: 1985 Rusty & Veronica Davidson, NM 1986 Jim Baird, KS 1987 Pete & Ina Gomez, CO 1988 Tom & Kaye Van Hee, CO 1989 Don Sondgeroth, CO 1990 Dennis Seino, HI 1991 Mark Scott, WY - USAW 1992 David Stormo, NM 1993 Toby & Amy Tobiasson, (UT) 1994 Mike & Sharon Farnsworth, CO 1995 Rosanne & Sean Eakin, NM 1996 Abby Chamberlain, WY 1997 Basil McCully, WY 1998 Amando Ybarra, NE 1999 Cathy Carson, WY 2000 Don Candelaria, WY 2001 Pete Cockett, WY 2002 Wade Discher, UT 2003 Joe Dowler, WY 2004 Dennis & Jill Thorson Family, WY 2005 Sarah Dawn Tolin, WY
