Evanston, Ill. - The residents at the U.S. Olympic Education Center, located at Northern Michigan Univ., put on an impressive performance at the University Greco-Roman National Championships on Thursday at Welsh-Ryan Arena, placing nine wrestlers in the finals at only eight weight classes, and crowning three individual champions. The USOEC team placed first with 123 team points, followed by the U.S. Marine Corps, which was a distant second with 26 team points. Joseph Betterman, Jeremiah Davis and Harry Lester each won individual titles for the USOEC. Betterman and Lester are both expected to heavily contend for spots on the 2005 U.S. World Team as well. Betterman won his first two matches at 55 kg/121 lbs. by fall, the first coming in just six seconds. In the finals, he downed USOEC teammate Spenser Mango, 1-0, 8-5. Davis also had a strong tournament, winning four matches at 60 kg/132 lbs. The only points he surrendered in the tournament were during a 3-3 loss of the second period in the finals against Marco Lara of the New York AC. Lester was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler for the second straight year after he breezed through the 66 kg/145.5 lbs. weight class. Lester did not allow a single point until the finals. One of those matches was a fall in 22 seconds in the semifinals. In the gold-medal bout, he defeated USOEC teammate Mervin Ford, 8-1, 7-0. The U.S. Air Force squad also had a good tournament, crowning two champions: Ricardo Osorio at 50 kg/110 lbs. and Justin Millard at 84 kg/185 lbs. Osorio pinned Terry Allison of the USOEC in the first period. Millard won all five of his matches without surrendering a single point. In the finals, he defeated Aaron Boone of the USOEC, 3-0, 1-0. At 74 kg/163 lbs., Iowa State wrestler Trent Paulson, representing the Cyclone WC, won a tough bout over Cheney Haight of the USOEC. Paulson won the first period, 3-0, but dropped the second period, 4-0. In the third stanza, Paulson squeaked out a 1-0 decision to win the bout. NCAA All-American J.D. Bergman of the Ohio International WC won a gold medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Bergman, a college wrestler at Ohio State, defeated Adam Haake of the USOEC, 7-0, 5-4 in the finals. In the second period, Bergman built a 5-0 lead and held off a late rally by Haake for the victory. Jake Marquardt of the Viking WC came back from a 3-0 deficit in the first period to pin unattached Dustin Fox at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. in the gold-medal bout. Freestyle competition at the University National Championships will begin on Friday morning and end on Saturday. TheMat.com will provide complete coverage. The University National Championships qualify wrestlers for the University World Team Trials to be held in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 22-29.
