LaVasseur captures Veterans Triple Crown; 17 win double titles at Veterans Freestyle Nationals

Metairie, La. - Mark LaVasseur of Minnesota won his second consecutive Veterans Triple Crown award with a gold medal at the Veterans Freestyle National Championships at Archbishop Rummel High School.    A Veterans Triple Crown is awarded when a wrestler wins national titles in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle. Last year was the first year a Veterans Triple Crown was awarded, making LaVasseur the first repeat winner of the award.    17 other wrestlers also won double titles, gold medals in two of the three styles. 15 of those won their double titles in freestyle and Greco-Roman.    Wrestlers compete in five different age divisions in Veterans competition: Division A (35-40 years old), Division B (41-45), Division C (46-50), Division D (51-55) and Division E (56 and older).    LaVasseur won his freestyle gold medal at 58 kg in Division C. Winning double titles in Division C were Larrick Johnson of Tennessee at 63 kg, Gogi Parseghian of California at 69 kg and Staff Polk of New Mexico at 85 kg. Parseghian won an uncontested weight class.    Also winning Division C titles were Richard Moore of Florida at 76 kg and Bruce Hulme of Ohio at 97 kg.    In Division A, three wrestlers won double titles: Carlos Bertot of Louisiana at 58 kg, Rob Porter of Illinois at 63 kg and Jeff Anderson of Michigan at 85 kg.    Bertot and Porter were the only double champions this year that won their other title in folkstyle.    Also winning a Division A national title was Annibal Nieves of Massachusetts at 69 kg.    In Division B, four wrestlers won double titles, including 2004 Veterans Freestyle World bronze medalist Clinton Brooks of Missouri at 58 kg. Brooks won his weight class uncontested.    Also winning double titles in Division B were Don Horning of Ohio at 63 kg, Ronald Hughes of California at 69 kg and Russ Schenk of Indiana at 76 kg. Hughes placed fifth at last year's Veterans Freestyle World Championships.    Other Division B national champions were Steve Smith of California at 85 kg and Mark Tracey of Oregon at 97 kg.    In Division D, a pair of 2004 Veterans Freestyle World bronze medalists won double titles, Steve Hart of Colorado at 58 kg and Peter Zurflieh of Pennsylvania at 63 kg. Hart won his weight class uncontested.    Ron Cole of Washington and Gerald Ponce of California won double titles at 97 kg and 130 kg, respectively, in Division D.    Also winning Division D national titles were Jim Lucas of California at 69 kg, Dave East of California at 76 kg and Tony Peraza of New York at 85 kg. East won his weight class uncontested.    In Division E, 2004 Veterans Freestyle World champion Shirzad Ahmadi of Connecticut won a double title after capturing a gold medal at 63 kg.    Also winning Division E double titles were Donald Apodaca of California at 85 kg and Joe Rensbeck of Wisconsin at 97 kg.    Other Division E champions were Jim Baron of Texas at 69 kg and James Butcher of Virginia at 76 kg. Baron won a bronze medal at last year's Veterans Freestyle World Championships. Butcher won his weight class uncontested.    Many of these athletes may choose to compete in the Veterans Freestyle World Championships. The 2005 Veterans Freestyle World Championships will be held in Tehran, Iran, September 2-4.
