Metairie, La. - Mark LaVasseur of Minnesota won his third straight Veterans Greco-Roman national title, becoming the first wrestler to accomplish such a feat, and six others won their second consecutive titles at the Veterans Greco-Roman National Championships at Archbishop Rummel High School. This was the third Veterans Greco-Roman National Championships in USA Wrestling's history. Wrestlers compete in five different age divisions in Veterans competition: Division A (35-40 years old), Division B (41-45), Division C (46-50), Division D (51-55) and Division E (56 and older). LaVasseur, competing in Division C, won a best-of-three series in only two matches at 58 kg for his gold medal. He was one of only three wrestlers to win a Veterans Triple Crown last year and he is the only wrestler still on pace to win one this year as well. A Veterans Triple Crown occurs when a wrestler wins national titles at the Veterans Folkstyle, Greco-Roman and Freestyle National Championships. This is the second year of awarding Triple Crown winners. LaVasseur was the only repeat champion in Division C. Also winning titles in this age group were Larrick Johnson of Tennessee at 63 kg, Gogi Parseghian of California at 69 kg, Tony Koures of Washington at 76 kg, Staff Polk of New Mexico at 85 kg and Tim Rock of New Jersey at 97 kg. Parseghian and Polk won their titles uncontested. Repeat champions in Division A were Darren Petty of Indiana at 58 kg and Mark Mirales of California at 97 kg. Petty won an uncontested weight class and Mirales won both matches in a best-of-three series by technical fall. Also winning Division A titles were Dave Nowick of Colorado at 63 kg and Jeff Anderson of Michigan at 85 kg. Anderson's weight class was uncontested. Steven Goss of Michigan was the only Division B repeat champion, capturing the gold medal at 97 kg with two close decisions. Goss placed fourth in last year's Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships. 2004 Veterans Greco-Roman World champion Ronald Hughes of California also captured a gold medal, winning at 69 kg. Other Division B winners were Clinton Brooks of Missouri at 58 kg, Don Horning of Ohio at 63 kg, Russ Schenk of Indiana at 76 kg and Curtis Nelson of California at 85 kg. Brooks won his weight class uncontested. Division D did not have any repeat champions, but 2004 Veterans Greco-Roman World bronze medalist Ronald Cole of Washington captured a gold medal at 97 kg. Cole defeated last year's national champion Jack Nutter of Ohio in a three-match set. Also winning titles in Division D were Steve Hart of Colorado at 58 kg, Peter Zurflieh of Pennsylvania at 63 kg, John Bennett of Connecticut at 69 kg, Steve Contarino of Florida at 85 kg and Gerald Ponce of California at 130 kg. Hart, Contarino and Ponce all won uncontested weight classes. Division E saw three wrestlers repeat as national champions: Shirzad Ahmadi of Connecticut at 63 kg, Joe Aiken of Washington at 76 kg and Donald Apodaca of California at 85 kg. Ahmadi and Aiken won uncontested weight classes and Apodaca, fourth in last year's Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships, won the first two matches in a best-of-three series. Also winning Division E national titles were Boris Parkhomovsky of Maryland at 69 kg and Joe Rensbeck of Wisconsin at 97 kg. Many of these athletes may choose to compete in the Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships. The 2005 Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships will be held in Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro, July 23-25.
