Alyssa Lampe of Tomahawk, Wis., the champion at 46 kg/101.25 lbs, was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Body Bar Women's FILA Cadet Nationals held in El Cajon, Calif., April 9 The tournament featured the nation's top 15-17 year old wrestlers competing in freestyle wrestling. Lampe won a star-studded weight class which featured many past All-Americans and respected competitors. The top five placewinners in the division were each a placewinner at a USA Wrestling National tournament last season. In the finals, Lampe pinned Cammy Yeik (Bremerton, Wash.), in 1:49. Last year, Lampe was second at the USA Wrestling Junior Nationals. Yeik was third in the USA Wrestling FILA Cadet Nationals in 2004. In a battle of returning champions competing this year at 70 kg/154.25 lbs., Melissa Simmons (Ridgefield, Wash) defeated Sheila McCabe (El Cajon, Calif.), 4-0, 7-0 in the gold-medal match. Last year, McCabe won the tournament at 143 pounds, while Simmons was the champion at 154.25 pounds. It was a tough day for returning champions, as Simmons was the only one to repeat. Three other returning champions were beaten in the finals. At 49 kg/108 lbs., Michaela Hutchison (Soldotna, Alaska) beat returning champion Joey Miller (Woodward, Okla.), 2-0, 2-0. Both were in the national news this year for winning medals at their state high school boys meet. Hutchison was second at the Alaska state tournament, while Miller placed fourth at the Oklahoma state championships. At 52 kg/114.5 lbs., Tatiana Padilla (La Verne, Calif.) stopped returning champion Nicole Darrow (Lanesboro, Mass.), 2-0, 4-0. Padilla was a champion at the USGWA Folkstyle Nationals a few weeks ago, and claimed her first major freestyle event. At 60 kg/132.25 lbs., Jackie Cataline (Corona, Calif.) defeated returning champion Cheyenne Stokes (Tulsa, Okla.), 6-0, 2-3, 4-0. In the pool competition, Cataline also defeated last year's runner-up Sara Peasley (Kimberley, Wis.). It was Cataline's first major freestyle competition. Winning the title at 56 kg/123.25 lbs. was Beth Johnson(Garden City, Kan.), who beat Amber Miracle (Berlin, Wis.), 5-0, 6-0 in the finals match. Johnson was a runner-up in the FILA Cadet Nationals last year. Other individual champions were Amy Whitbeck (Duansburg, N.Y.) at 40 kg/88 lbs., Paige Rife (Fowlerville, Mich.) at 65 kg/143.25 lbs. and Rachel Gomez (W. Sacremento, Calif.) at 78 kg/170 lbs. and Brittany Delgado (Fountain Inn, S.C.) at 100 kg/220 lbs. Whitbeck won a best of three series, beating Amy Bloom, Lebanon, Calif. Bloom won the first match, then Whitbeck won the second bout. Whitbeck won the final bout, 4-3, 6-1. Rife won a four-athlete pool pool, wining both of her matches. Included was a 50-second pin over Katrina Wilborn, San Diego, Calif., who was the runner-up. Gomez won a four-athlete pool, winning three matches including a pin over Desiree Memea (Ewa Beach, Hawaii), the runner-up. Gomez pinned all three of her opponents. Delgado won a best-of-three series over Cassandra Wolpe (Ventura, Calif.) in two straight, defeating her 3-0, 6-0 in the first match and 3-0, 4-0 in the second match.
