USA Wrestling has postponed the first National Open Beach Wrestling Championships, which had been announced to be held in Las Vegas, Nev., on Sunday, May 1. USA Wrestling was unable to secure a sufficient competition venue that met the requirements of hosting the competition on the date announced, nor felt that specific rules and format have been sufficiently determined to host a quality National Championship event. A site and date for the first National Open Beach Wrestling Championships have not yet been determined, and will be announced when available. Beach wrestling is the newest form of international wrestling. FILA, the international wrestling federation, announced the creation of this new style of wrestling during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The plan was to hold the first Beach Nationals one day after the conclusion of the U.S. National Wrestling Championships, which are being held in Las Vegas, April 29-30. Other events being held alongside the U.S. Nationals include the Men's FILA Junior Nationals and the Western Junior Regionals. A large group from the wrestling community will be in Las Vegas that weekend for those events, which would have provided an opportunity for more people to get involved with the new beach wrestling competition. "USA Wrestling is disappointed that we could not arrange to hold the National Open Beach Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas this year," said USA Wrestling Director of National Event Pete Isais. "We apologize to those who were planning on being involved in the event. We hope to be able to secure a quality competition venue at a convenient location and date for this inaugural event soon." Those who are interested in hosting the National Open Beach Wrestling Championships, or wish to receive more information on beach wrestling, should contact Pete Isais of USA Wrestling at 719-598-8181.
