USA Wrestling hires Terry Brands as National Freestyle Resident Coach

USA Wrestling has hired Terry Brands of Chattanooga, Tenn. as its National Freestyle Resident Coach.    Brands, a two-time World Champion and an Olympic bronze medalist as a freestyle athlete, is currently the head wrestling coach at the Univ. of Tennessee - Chattanooga (UTC).    Brands will move to Colorado Springs, Colo. and will coach the U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athletes in freestyle wrestling, as well as the nation's elite freestyle wrestlers who come there for training opportunities. He will work closely with National Freestyle Coach Kevin Jackson to help the United States achieve its goal of being the world's best freestyle wrestling team.    Brands assumes the position which became vacant when National Freestyle Resident Coach Sergei Beloglazov accepted a coaching position with the Sunkist Kids club in Phoenix, Ariz.    "Terry Brands has long epitomized American wrestling," said USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender. "His legendary work ethic and commitment to the sport will help strengthen our freestyle effort as we strive to be No. 1 in the world."    "I am excited about having Terry as part of our staff," said Jackson. "The success he has had during his career, both as a competitor and coach, will add a great deal to our program. Under the new wrestling rules, there are baseline skills for success. Terry brings these skills into the program, as well as the technique, intensity and motivation that will help the U.S. team."    Brands has served three years as the head coach at UTC, helping bring the Mocs program to national prominence. This season, his UTC team placed 21st at the NCAA Div. I Championships, with two individual All-Americans. This year, his squad won the Southern Conference Championship, with three individual champions. The program has reached new levels of success, excitement and popularity under his leadership.    Brands served 10 years as an assistant coach on the college level. Prior to taking the UTC job, he serve on year as the assistant to David Ray at NAIA power Montana State-Northern. He worked under head coach Mark Manning at the Univ. of Nebraska from 2000 to 2001. He was an assistant coach at national-powerhouse the Univ. of Iowa for Jim Zalesky from 1997-2000 and for Dan Gable from 1992-97.    Brands was one of the nation's greatest freestyle wrestlers, winning World gold medals in 1993 in Toronto, Canada and inn1995 in Atlanta, Ga. at 57 kg/125.5 pounds. As a member of the 1993 and 1995 U.S. World Teams, he was on the only two U.S. teams to win World Team Titles in freestyle.    In 1993, he won his world title alongside his twin brother Tom, who was the World champion at 62 kg/136.5 lbs. Alongside his brother Tom, he was named 1993 USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year, 1993 John Smith Freestyle Wrestler of the Year and 1993 Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year. The Brands brothers became the first U.S. brothers to win a World title during the same year.    Brands placed second to Kendall Cross in the 1996 U.S. Nationals and the 1996 Olympic Team Trials, falling just short of making the U.S. Olympic Team. His best-of-three finals series against Cross at the Olympic Trials in Spokane, Wash. is one of the most memorable and competitive showdowns in U.S. history. After beating Brands, Cross went on to win the Olympic gold medal in Atlanta, Ga.    Brands qualified for the 1997 and 1999 U.S. World Teams, but did not compete due to injury. In 2000, he made a comeback and won the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Dallas, Texas at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. He earned a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.    He was a two-time World Cup champion (1994, 1995) and won a gold medal at the 1995 Pan American Games. He was twice a silver medalist at the respected Yarygin Tournament in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Brands won three U.S. Nationals titles, and was runner-up three times.     Brands was a two-time NCAA Div. I champion  for the Univ. of Iowa (1990, 1992) and a NCAA runner-up in 1991  competing for the legendary coach Dan Gable. He won three Big Ten titles, as well. Brands ended his career at Iowa with a 137-7 record. Brands is a graduate of the Univ. of Iowa with a degree in Human Development and Sport.    "The opportunities with USA Wrestling are unlimited," said Brands. "This allows me to focus on my strength, which is in the wrestling room with the athletes. I feel very good about that. I started competing internationally in 1993, and traveling the world with National Coach Bruce Burnett then. I have been interested in coaching with USA Wrestling since. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to be there now."    "We have the potential to do well at every World and Olympic tournament that we enter," said Brands. "The resources that we have, along with our freedom as a nation, should allow the U.S. to be effective in winning World and Olympic medals. The athletes have to do it from there. They have to go out and earn the gold."    Brands is originally from Sheldon, Iowa. He and wife Michelle have a son, Nelson, 4, and a daughter, Sydney, 3.
