Five wrestlers repeat as champions at second Veterans Folkstyle Nationals

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Five wrestlers won their second titles on Saturday afternoon at the second Veterans Folkstyle National Championships behind held in conjunction with the Kids/Cadet National Championships at the UNI-Dome. Repeating as champions were Michael Kelly of Illinois at 168 lbs. in Division A (born 1968-1975), Anthony Porcelli of Iowa at 188 lbs. in Division B (born 1960-67), Mark LaVasseur of Minnesota at 128 lbs. and Dave Wadsworth of West Virginia in Division C (born 1952-59) and David Hartman of Alabama at 188 lbs. in Division D (born 1951 and before). Both LaVasseur and Hartman won their titles this year at an older division than last year. In Division A, Rodney Bolden of Indiana won the 188-pound title after winning four matches on the afternoon. Other Division A champions were Jeff Donovan of Missouri at 214 lbs. and Brian Schmitt of Missouri at 287 lbs. In Division B, two wrestlers, Carlos Bertot of Louisiana at 128 lbs. and Rick Robison of Minnesota at 168 lbs., won the first two matches of a best-of-three series with the only other competitors in their respective weight classes. Winning round-robin action at four-man weights were Robert Porter of Illinois at 139 lbs. and John Richter of North Dakota at 214 lbs. Mike Jozwowski of Wisconsin also won a title in Division B at 152 lbs. In Division C, Bruce Moe of North Dakota battled through a tough five-man weight class to win his first national title at 168 lbs. Dave Ullom of Iowa pinned his opponent twice in a best-of-three series at 287 lbs. Winning uncontested titles were Keith Warhime of Pennsylvania at 287 lbs. in Division B, Jon Silver of California at 139 lbs., Warren Howard of Wisconsin at 152 lbs. and Jim Langstraat of Iowa at 188 lbs. in Division C, Mike Zorick of California at 152 lbs., Pat Ancil of Florida at 168 lbs. and Steve Sanders of California at 214 lbs. in Division D. The next step for the Veterans towards winning a Triple Crown will be at the Veterans Freestyle and Greco-Roman National Championships in Metairie, La., April 8-9.
