Pre-orders are being accepted for a comprehensive new book which chronicles a century of college wrestling history. "The History of Collegiate Wrestling" by veteran wrestling historian Jarius K. Hammond, provides in-depth coverage of every year that college wrestling has been contested. "This book is the most comprehensive and colorful study on the 100-year history of collegiate wrestling in the United States," said Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. "Never have I seen a book of this magnitude which so fully showcases the wrestlers, coaches and teams that have made their mark on the NCAA Championships." The book relives the glory of college wrestling through stunning photos and timeless stories. It serves not only as a reference source, but also an inspirational book for future generations. It provides season-by-season highlights and features those who have impacted college wrestling. For Hammond, who was a co-author of the "History of the EIWA Championships" and the webmaster for a popular college wrestling history web page www.wrestlingstats.com, this project was a labor of love. "This is a comprehensive study of competitive collegiate wrestling from its inception in 1903 to the present," said Hammond. "The primary emphasis of the book will be on the years since 1928, when the NCAA wrestling tournament was first contested. The book will be organized in chronological fashion, with a narrative chapter for each season from 1928 through 2005." Up to 20 contributing wrestling writers, who provided feature materials for this impressive volume, assisted Hammond. "Each of these chapters will consider dual meets, post season tournaments and the Division I tournament itself," said Hammond. "There will also be an introductory chapter covering the foundation years (1903 - 1927) of collegiate wrestling. The war years of 1943 - 1945, when no NCAA tournament was held, will be discussed in a single chapter. There will be feature articles and sidebars dealing with all aspects of collegiate wrestling imbedded within the chronology. They will examine such topics as prominent coaches and wrestlers, school traditions and other features." When asked what facts and stories impressed Hammond during his research for the book, he noted the following: * "Cornell of Iowa winning the 1947 NCAA tournament" * "Edward Gallagher's link to so many great collegiate coaches (every coach except two to win an NCAA team title)." * "Oklahoma State's amazing dual meet records, including losing just one dual meet to a non-Oklahoma school in a 48-year span." * The Peery family (father Rex and sons Hugh and Ed) going nine for nine in individual championships at the NCAA tournament. Anybody who has an interest and passion for college wrestling should pre-order this book and take advantage of the generous discount. All proceeds from the book sales benefit the books publisher, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. The cost of the book will be $49.75 each.
