The JRC Memorial Scholarship Program enters its third year of providing opportunities for civic-minded and disadvantaged athletes to participate in quality wrestling camps around the United States. The JRC Memorial Fund was established in honor of John Ricciardi, Rochelle Levitetz and Charlie Levitetz and is dedicated to assisting wrestling athletes achieve their dreams and excel in the sport of wrestling. Through the generous donations made possible by the JRC Memorial Scholarship Fund over the past two years, over 75 athletes have had the privilege to participate in wrestling opportunities they would not have otherwise been able to afford. "We have a charity I started 10 years ago, from which this program was created," said Jeff Levitetz, a member of USA Wrestling's Board of Directors who developed this program. "This program is all about what impact the sport can make on a kid. It is a great way to build self-confidence. To provide an opportunity for kids who can't otherwise afford to go to camp is a very exciting thing." Through a selection process established by USA Wrestling, approximately 125 athletes will be granted scholarships to attend camps of their choice in the spring and summer of 2005. USA Wrestling will again work with some of the best known-wrestling camp directors in the country to provide these unique opportunities. "We want to make this program grow," said Levitetz. "I feel very comfortable that the right kids are being reached. It is important that USA Wrestling provide this program for young people, as a way to link our grassroots programs with the Olympic programs. This is the direction of USA Wrestling, to serve and assist young people." Over the past two years, camp scholarships have been awarded for athletes to attend the following camps: Chertow Gold Medal Camps, John Smith's Oklahoma State Camps, Athlete in Actions Camps, Carl Adams Camps, Martin's Granby School, Quest 4 Gold Camps, Wrestle the World Camps, Character Counts Camps, and many more outstanding camps around the country. In addition, funds from the scholarship are designated specifically to help athletes in the USA Wrestling State Association of Florida through a special part of the program named in honor of the late Richard Anthony Tucci, son of FILA Official and United States Wrestling Officials Association President Rick Tucci. "The JRC Memorial Scholarship Fund program provides opportunities for so many fine young athletes to excel in their favorite sport," said USA Wrestling Director of State Services Mark Scott "With out the assistance of the scholarship funds, the dreams of these athletes would not have been realized. The program has been come a vital key in assisting USA Wrestling by providing enhanced wrestling opportunities to a broader base of athletes." Qualifications for the Scholarship program include the following: 1) Must be a youth at least entering into the sixth grade in the fall of 2005 2) Active in community, school and civic-based activities 3) Representative of a positive image, seeking to learn and grow into a leader. "If one of these kids do something exceptional in their lives in any area, because of what they learned in wrestling, this camp program is a major success," said Levitetz. "I believe wrestling is training for the rest of your life. Anybody who participated in this sport can be an Olympian in life. Everybody has a shot for success in their life."
