Over the years, since the revival of the Ultimate Fighting Championships, it has become glaringly obvious that wrestlers are the most successful fighters in the mixed martial arts arena. In the UFC's next major event on April 16, wrestlers will hold the lion's share of the fight card. Six former wrestlers will step into the octagon. The two title fights will be all-wrestler bouts. In the main event, two former wrestling standouts will battle for the illustrious light heavyweight title. This highly anticipated rematch pits wrestling legend Randy Couture against collegiate star Chuck Liddell. Couture was a multiple Greco-Roman World Team member, a three-time NCAA All-American and a U.S. Armed Forces champion. He has seen success at all levels of wrestling and now rules the octagon in the UFC. At 41 years young, Couture is the only fighter to have held a title in two separate weight divisions within the UFC (twice at heavyweight and twice at light heavyweight). And he shows no signs of letting up in the near future. Randy Couture is nothing short of astonishing in the octagon. Liddell, 35, has his own impressive achievements on the mat. Known as "The Iceman," Liddell started the sport of wrestling in San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, Calif. his sophomore year. He went to Cal Poly where he was a four-year letterman at the Div. I Wrestling program. Chuck was also a State Champion in Freestyle Wrestling in California. This battle of beasts is the crest of a wave of wrestlers infiltrating mixed martial arts. Not to be outdone by the light heavyweight bout, another all-wrestler title comes in at welterweight for yet another electrifying rematch. Wrestling notables Matt Hughes and Frank Trigg will meet in the octagon for a second time. Hughes previously defended his welterweight title against Trigg by submitting Trigg in a rear-naked choke. Matt Hughes got a late start in wrestling, but came along quickly. Starting the sport as a freshman in high school, he was a two-time state champion and went on to achieve Div. I All-American status twice for Eastern Illinois University. Hughes is arguably the most dominant fighter in the UFC, successfully defending his welterweight title five times. While it is unusual for one fighter to control a weight class for so long, Hughes, 31, doesn't seem to have any plans to let the welterweight division get away from him. Trigg was a Division I wrestler and a fierce competitor on the international mat. However, mixed martial arts have become his vocation of choice. At 32 years old, he just is beginning to find himself in MMA. Trigg explains why a wrestling background is key to winning in MMA. "Unlike the other martial arts, wrestling uses balance and a connection to the ground at all times. Wrestling isn't just about beating up a guy; it's about taking advantage of position and controlling your opponent. There is no other martial art out there that focuses so much on control," said Trigg. The wrestling connection continues in the undercard bouts, with an Olympic silver medalist and a NCAA Champion in the lineup. Matt "the Law" Lindland ruled Greco-Roman wrestling, winning a silver medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and a silver medal at the 2001 World Championships. Lindland, 34, is still finding his place in the UFC, but he remains a favorite among true UFC fans. Both wrestling and UFC fans will be delighted to hear that Mike Van Arsdale will be returning to the world of MMA. In his last UFC fight, Van Arsdale defeated Gracie Jiu Jitsu fighter Joe Pardo with an arm lock at UFC 17. A NCAA wrestling champion and accomplished freestyle wrestler, Van Arsdale has been wrestling and then coaching the U.S. Army wrestling team for the past four years. He now returns to octagon at the age of 39. The question on everyone's mind is, "Why are wrestlers dominating mixed martial arts so soundly?" Wrestlers are starting later and staying in it longer. All six wrestlers in UFC 52 are above the age of 30. All six athletes had a successful career in wrestling prior to their mixed martial arts era. And they aren't the only wrestlers out there joining the ranks of UFC, WFA, Pride, Pancrase and other MMA groups after they finish in wrestling. When asked why he thinks wrestlers have been so successful in MMA, Trigg said, "Wrestling is a great foundation for the sport. No sport brings that kind of intensity. Elite level wrestlers know how to train and how to peak for competition. Wrestling competition develops mental and psychological skills. You learn how to deal with the adversity of competing. Wrestlers know how to analyze their opponent for competition and that technical background of wrestling crosses over well in MMA." Dana White, President of the UFC recognizes the impact wrestling has in mixed martial arts. "Wrestling is a fantastic sport that has great takedowns and teaches you how to control your opponents on the ground. Wrestlers are incredibly conditioned athletes and have great balance," White said. "Many people feel that wrestling is the best base you can have as an MMA competitor and I am sure that we will continue to have many great fighters with wrestling backgrounds." Wrestling fans will be treated to an extraordinary night on April 16. Not only will we see some of college and international favorites enter the octagon, but they just happen to be among the toughest guys in the UFC. This will be wrestling's night in the octagon. MMA fans know that wrestlers possess dominance, strength and skill. It is really no secret. And on April 16, you'll see what all the hype is about.
